“Before modern air conditioning, the Gulf’s locals coexisted with the sun & heat, utilizing local thermal-resistant building materials & architectural & urban design elements that harnessed nature to lower indoor temperatures,” Marianne Dhenin reports.

But post-World War II, an oil-fueled building boom from Saudi Arabia to Qatar saw the region wholeheartedly embrace AC & other foreign norms, almost entirely forgoing traditional methods of keeping cool.

Now, “the constant hum of machines & brush of chilled air have become as much a part of everyday life in the Gulf as the dust that settles on sidewalks & parked cars.”

Shather Naqi, a Kuwaiti street photographer noticed a gap, street photography barely exists Kuwait, where most work leans toward food, product, and architectural shots.
"The hot sunny weather in Kuwait is definitely the number one reason photographers don't shoot this style of photography here," Naqi says.

She decided to go out in it anyway, shooting both digital and film, a Fujifilm X-T5 alongside a Nikon F3 and Nikon F80.

Her focus is daily life: the ordinary moments and the culture and traditions of Kuwait as they exist right now, in the 21st century. "I'm hoping that in the future people will look at my photos to see and visualise how life was in Kuwait in this period," she says.

She also points to the small number of Kuwaiti women working in street photography, and says she hopes this series encourages more women to pick up the genre.
