I got this fortune cookie message in February and it's been on my fridge ever since. At the time, I was feeling kind of uninspired and aimless. My most recent book had come out five months earlier, and I had no idea what to write next, or if whatever I did write next would get published. I had to take time off running and do physical therapy for a tendon issue. Other life stuff was life-ing and I wasn't feeling very hopeful about things. So, when I read this fortune, I liked imagining that five months from now, July and its mysterious adventures had great things in store for me.

July can't take all the credit, but the passage of time did work its magic. By April, I had a book idea I was excited about. By the end of June, I had an outline, and in July I wrote the first chapter. Also in July, I got cleared to return to running. So, all things considered, not too shabby a fortune.

I don't know what will come from here (clearly I'm due for another fortune cookie). Time will tell if this book I'm working on will see the light of day, but for now, it's fun to be excited about something.

Thank you for giving my novel such a warm welcome! Seeing your posts, reading your messages, and speaking with local readers and bookish folks at the launch event has filled me with joy. Thank you for making this my favorite launch experience yet!

And now, a couple of audiobook happenings:
First, my book is available as an audiobook on Spotify. I got the promo info late on release day, so I'm posting it now and we can all pretend it was part of my original release day post.

Second, there is a bounty of audiobook deals on my other books. The audiobook for The Banned Bookshop of Maggie Banks is on sale for $2.99 on Chirp until October 2. And the audiobook for Must Love Books and The Townsend Family Recipe for Disaster are on sale for $3.99 until October 2.

Just be careful, because when you listen to an audiobook while you're, say, in the backyard with your dog, your neighbor might say something, and you might not hear her, and you might give her a general wave and hello in hopes that that's an appropriate response, and then you might spend the rest of time wondering what your neighbor said, questioning if your wave and hello was an appropriate response, and hoping she doesn't think you're rude. But there are worse consequences of not hearing someone, as Lauryn Harper can attest to.

If any of these audiobook things speaks to you, you can find the links in my bio.

And with all that audiobook promo out of the way, happy first day of fall! I hope things are crisp and cozy wherever you are. My fourth book is now out in the world! You can find it wherever books, ebooks, or audiobooks are sold (or loaned. Yay libraries).

This is a story about friendship, a small town trying its best, a group of people who feel like failures, and the apple festival they're trying to get off the ground. It's about second chances, derailed plans, and the unfortunate consequences of mustard floods.

And, as a little treat for me, it's also about the everyday awkwardnesses that accompany being deaf in one ear. (If we've spoken in person, I'll confess now that if I've ever responded to something in a way that makes no sense, it's probably because you were on my deaf side and I gave up on trying to hear you. Sometimes it's easier to just pretend. Although, as Lauryn discovers in the first chapter, that approach can backfire spectacularly.)

Richmond-area folks, I'll be at Fountain Bookstore this evening at 6pm for book-signing and conversation. See you there, maybe! Fountain Bookstore has been kind enough to host an in-person book launch for my book next week! I'll be chatting with Andi, brilliant bookseller extraordinaire, about this book (and probably lots of other things too. Who's stopping us? No one!).

This is the first book I wrote since moving to the Richmond area two years ago, and so Richmond is all over this book. For example, the apple festival it centers on was inspired by the many festivals I've attended since moving here. I drank tomato lemonade at the tomato festival. I ate watermelon topped with feta ice cream at the watermelon festival. If there's a festival that revolves around one food item, I will most likely be there.

For a Richmond bookstore to embrace this book and host a launch event is such a kindness. I'm looking forward to fun and conversation. If you're in the area, I hope you'll consider coming! Link in bio has RSVP details--and a link to where you can pre-order the book from Fountain, if you're so inclined.

(And thank you to my publisher for once again saving me from having to make a graphic.) Four books in and there are still so many firsts to experience. Here's one I can now cross off the list: my first starred review!

I still can't believe an actual book review publication said such nice things about my silly book about a town recovering from a mustard flood and thought it was worthy of the special distinction of a star. I just might be wallpapering my home with this review.

Review quote: "Robinson's charming story of derailed plans and unexpected friendship is a lively, joyful read."

Lauryn Harper Falls Apart publishes in three (!) weeks, on September 9. Order links are in bio if you'd like to pre-order it. Thank you to anyone who has! We're three months out from publication, so I should probably talk about it, right?

I call this the mustard book.

It started as one idea, then changed shape as I incorporated elements my publisher requested. In the process of trying to combine my ideas with theirs, the original story fell apart, and I was at a loss for how to weave the disparate pieces together into a cohesive story idea. And then an unlikely solution emerged: a mustard flood.

This story takes place in a (fictional) town that once experienced a mustard flood.

Is it silly? Of course it is. I've never been able to resist a dash of silliness.

So, that's the setting. What's the book about? A newly demoted overachiever returning to the struggling hometown she abandoned. A group of screw-ups finding community in each other. Two ex-best friends taking steps toward mending a chilldhood friendship. A quest to resurrect a beloved fall festival and save a dying town.

Also, this book might induce cravings for soft pretzels and caramel apples and I'm sorry about that.

Lauryn Harper Falls Apart publishes on September 9, and if it interests you, I hope you'll consider pre-ordering it! Links in bio. Mustard not included with purchase. This is one of I'm sure 4,000 posts you might be seeing about this pre-order sale, but my publisher kindly made me this graphic and you know how I am about feeling obligated to do things when people are nice. It's time for the obligatory "My book comes out today" post! Are you ready? Let's do it.

My book comes out today! I drafted the majority of this book (as in, everything except for the first three chapters, which I'd had to submit in advance) two years ago, in July 2022. I was just starting a new job, fresh off my first bout of COVID, and diving headfirst into the world of Mae Townsend. This book is about family, identity, belonging, and there's a healthy dose of food in there too. There's also a funeral, a wedding, a barbecue, and a lot of mac and cheese along the way. I got the idea for this book about a decade ago, but it took years before I ever sat down to write it. The concept was so close to my heart that it felt scary to write it down and put it out into the world. And, well. Now it's in the world. No turning back on that front. But let's all agree that if there's anything you don't like about it, we'll blame COVID brain.

Thank you to anyone who has shouted out, read, borrowed, requested, sold, or reviewed this book! Books are nothing without the readers, booksellers, librarians, and publishers who give it life.

You can find it wherever books are sold (see the link in my bio). It's also available as an audiobook! You can listen on Spotify or wherever you get your audiobooks.

And a reminder that I'll be speaking with the brilliant @audreyburges about all things books tonight at 6pm at Fountain Bookstore in Richmond, VA. All are welcome!

No surprise that the things I saw fit to take pictures of this month boil down to dogs, food, and books. These pictures don't capture all the beautiful and unique bookstores we visited while doing book events in North Carolina this week, nor the kind and generous booksellers and readers we met along the way, but I am grateful to every single one of them!

My June roundup consists of:

1. Yeti, the most perfect dog around.
2. A Brazilian carrot cake with chocolate glaze. So different from American carrot cake, but every bit as delicious!
3. My first homemade loaf of sourdough (not pictured, for it's too heartbreaking: the chip my brand new Dutch oven acquired while baking this first loaf of sourdough).
4. The first cherries of the season, at a reasonable price for once!
5. A loaf of sandwich bread.
6. Hazelnut, the sweetest and cuddliest mascot of @southmainbookcompany in Salisbury, North Carolina.
7. A cookbook centered on one of my all-time favorite desserts: pie! Acquired at the beautiful @clearysbookstore in Mount Holly, North Carolina.
8. The Levain-style giant chocolate chip cookies I started baking within hours of getting home from the North Carolina book trip.
9. The joys of being back home with Yeti, still the most perfect dog around.

I'll be back tomorrow with some actual promo for my book that's coming out in, oh, right, two days. But by the end of the week, my book will be out and I can go back into hiding! And we'll all rejoice!
