MEET NOLAN

I’m currently entering my final season of junior hockey. In my career I’ve been fortunate enough to play in the GOHL (Pelham Panthers, Elmira Sugar Kings), NAHL(Colorado Grit), and MHL(Amherst Ramblers)

Growing up around high-level hockey and gaining experience with youth teams across Ontario and Colorado has helped shape my passion for developing the next generation of players through hockey IQ and video analysis.

I’m excited to continue growing the game and helping athletes better understand it.

💪 Break Down. Build Up.

One NHL goal. Two habits that separate players.

On this play, Logan Stankoven cuts to the middle before hounding the puck. Then Jackson Blake finds open ice in the slot and gets rewarded.

Hounding pucks can lead to turnovers and regaining possession. Finding open ice creates opportunities.

These are small details, but they can sometimes be the difference between staying where you are and making the jump to AAA or Junior hockey.

💪 Break Down. Build Up.

Everyone is fast. Everyone is skilled.

One of the biggest separators at higher levels isn’t talent—it’s hockey IQ.

In this breakdown, a Saginaw Spirit assistant coach explains why watching hockey with purpose can give players an edge. Understanding systems, reading plays, and learning from others can help accelerate your development away from the rink.

The players who learn the game often stay ahead of the game.

💪 Break Down, Build Up

At 5v5, roughly 42–48% of NHL goals are scored off the rush.

One of the best ways to create those chances? Attack the middle of the ice.

When you drive middle, you force defenders to back up and make a decision. That opens passing lanes, creates space, and leads to more dangerous scoring opportunities.

Stop attacking the perimeter. Own the middle.

💪 BREAK DOWN, BUILD UP

Most players think development only happens at the rink. It doesn’t.

3 ways to improve your game away from the ice:

🏒 Identify what you’re already good at and lean into your strengths.
🎯 Set clear goals
👀 Watch the game with intention and learn from players who do it at a high level.

The players who improve fastest are the ones developing their hockey IQ long before they step on the ice.

What’s one thing you do away from the rink to get better?

💪 Break Down. Build Up

Most youth wingers think they need better hands, more speed, or a harder shot.

In reality, one small habit can completely open up the game.

👀 Shoulder checking before the puck arrives.

When you know where the pressure is coming from, you stop panicking and start making confident plays.

The best players gather information before they touch the puck.

💪 BREAK DOWN. BUILD UP.

A defenceman’s biggest advantage isn’t skating, shooting, or stickhandling.

It’s information.

In today’s breakdown from the Vegas vs Colorado game, we looked at how scanning the ice early, staying patient with the puck, and avoiding overcommitting defensively can completely change a shift.

The game is won by players who see it first.

💪 BREAK DOWN. BUILD UP.

The biggest misconception in youth hockey is spending 2 hours on the ice everyday at a young age automatically means more development.

The reality? Everyone skates. Everyone trains.

The players who separate themselves today understand the game better. They study their shifts, learn how to create space, and develop their hockey IQ through video.

That’s where I help.

💪 BREAK DOWN. BUILD UP.

One of the most underrated skills in hockey isn’t your shot, your speed, or your hands.

It’s your ability to recognize and create space.

The best players don’t just react to the game—they understand where the ice is opening up before everyone else. That’s what creates time, options, and ultimately scoring chances.

This is the type of hockey IQ and spatial awareness I help players develop through personalized video analysis and coaching.
