POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We didn’t just renovate a building; we uncovered our own history along the way.

From old studio photos to construction dust to the space you see today, every phase of this journey was about building something built to last. Built for the dancers of today, and tomorrow.

Meet us on the dance floor.

Berkeley’s artists deserve a place to stay, create, and thrive. 💛

From dance classes and theater to public art and scholarships, the arts bring us together and help our community grow.

Hear from Jill, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center’s Co-Executive Director, about why she’s saying YES to Measure Y—and what investing in the arts means for the city we call home.

Berkeley voters: join us in voting YES on Measure Y! 🗳️

What is remembered lives. 🤍

This month, we remember SADC co-founder Frank Shawl, who passed away on October 4, 2019.

In the midst of a busy season, our tribute comes a few days late—but Frank is with us every day. As his dream of a theater for dance in downtown Berkeley comes to life at Center Street, we feel his presence in all we’re building together.

We miss you, Frank. We hope we’re making you proud.

If you have a memory of Frank, we’d love for you to share it below.

Meet Valerie Gutwirth, one of the wonderful yoga instructors who helps make SADC what it is. 🤍

Valerie’s journey with us has grown through movement, connection, and community, and we’re so happy to have her sharing her practice with our dancers and students.

Her classes are a space to slow down, build strength, find balance, and move with intention. Come meet Valerie and experience her practice for yourself!

We asked Jill Randall, our Co-Executive Director, what keeps people coming back to SADC, and her answer says it all. 🤍

Because SADC has always been about more than just taking a class. It’s about the people you meet, the connections you build, the chance to keep growing, and having a place where you feel welcomed exactly as you are.

For so many of us, SADC becomes more than a studio. It becomes a community, a creative home, and a place you keep coming back to.

Come find your place at SADC.

One day to pause. A whole week of possibilities. 💃🏽✨

SADC will be closed Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Classes and programs resume Tuesday, October 13—and this is your invitation to plan a little joy into the week ahead.

What will your next move be? Return to a class you love, explore a different style, or invite someone to join you. Your calendar deserves something that helps you feel creative, connected, and fully yourself.

Here are five ways to get moving:

🩰 BEGINNING BALLET | Naila Brown
Tuesday, October 13 • 10-11:30a
With live accompanist Rudy Apffel
SADC Elmwood • Studio 2
Make room for music, movement, and a fresh beginning.

🎭 MUSICAL THEATER | Tajh Malik
Tuesday, October 13 • 6:15-7:45p
All levels • SADC Downtown • Studio B
Bring your love of storytelling and let your movement take center stage.

🔥 HIP HOP | Katana Pop
Wednesday, October 14 • 7:30-9p
Mixed level • SADC Downtown • Studio C
Give your midweek plans a new rhythm.

🌿 MODERN | Dana Lawton
Saturday, October 17 • 9:30-11a
Beginning/Intermediate • SADC Downtown • Studio B
Start your weekend with curiosity and room to move.

✨ JAZZ | Antoine Hunter with Urban Jazz Dance Company
Sunday, October 18 • 10-11:30a
Beginning/Intermediate • Live ASL interpreter
SADC Elmwood • Studio 1 / Online
Make movement and connection part of your Sunday.

LET’S BUILD OUR DANCE WEEK TOGETHER:
Comment with the class you’re choosing—and tag the friend you’d love to bring! Returning dancers: tell us what keeps you coming back. Trying something new? Tell us which style has caught your eye. 👇🏽

Save this post, check the full schedule for your level, and plan your next class at shawl-anderson.org.

📍 SADC Elmwood: 2705 Alcatraz Ave, Berkeley
📍 SADC Downtown: 2055 Center St, Berkeley

Your next favorite part of the week might begin on the dance floor. We can’t wait to move with you!
