Happy 82nd birthday to our original Maverick. ❤️

People have always told me how much I look like my mom. Looking at these old photos, I think I am a pretty good combination of both of my parents. But personality? There is a LOT of Lou Seldon in me. 😂

My dad never officially had the nickname “Maverick,” but he has always been OUR Maverick. And he may have had something to do with the name of my company. 😜

He also missed his calling as a publicist. He can and will talk to anyone. And if you disagree with him? Even better. He will happily try to change your heart and mind. I cannot imagine where I got that particular trait. 😂

We are early risers. Well, him always, me sometimes. And we are ALWAYS early. Airports, appointments, events. Military time: if you are not five minutes early, you are late.

For most of the past 30 years, I have lived somewhere other than where my parents live. For the past five or so, I have made it a point to be in Texas for Dad’s birthday.

This year is different. Life brought me back to Texas, and now I get the ordinary days too. ❤️

The older I get, the more of him I recognize in myself.

Happy 82nd birthday, Dad. I love you.

Now let the sound take you away… 🎶

Equal parts day and night. A moment in balance. 🍂

And a reminder that nothing stays the same. We grow, flourish, shed, rest and begin again.

Twenty-five years.

I was 25 years old on September 11, 2001. Today I am 50. Somehow, putting it that way makes the passage of time feel impossible.

I was living at 19th and Second in Manhattan and walking to work that morning, headphones on, listening to my Walkman, when I heard a jet flying far lower than it should have. People around me stopped and stared south.

When I reached Sixth Avenue, I could see smoke. At my office on 26th Street, my colleagues were gathered around the television watching the first tower burn.

Together, we watched the second plane hit.

Everything after that exists in fragments.

Phones went down. Trying to find the people I loved. Military vehicles and tanks in the streets. Fighter jets overhead. Smoke visible from my office and the roof of my apartment for days.

That night, I sat on our futon watching the BBC, drinking bourbon until dawn and wondering what would happen next.

We could not imagine what “normal” would look like again.

Twenty-five years later, I can still picture that 25-year-old woman walking through Manhattan with her headphones on, surrounded by people staring south, with no idea that her world was about to change.

She feels like another person sometimes. And sometimes she feels like she was me yesterday.

September 11 changed the world. It changed me, too.

But I also remember what came after.

People found one another. They cared for strangers. They ran toward danger to save others. They helped each other through the unimaginable.

There is so much loss, fear and suffering in the world right now. Maybe we need that reminder more than ever.

We are stronger when we find each other.

Always remember. Never forget. taken in New York City by @shawnaseldon

I am not sure I took a breath for the first 45 years of my life. 😂

I am only half kidding.

For decades, I thought high performance meant going harder. Think faster. Work later. Say yes. Catch the flight. Take the meeting. Solve the problem. Handle the crisis.

What I did not understand was that being highly activated is not necessarily the same thing as being highly effective.

My latest @incmagazine gets personal about something I am still learning: how stress changes the way we think, what our bodies may know before our brains catch up, and why sometimes the smartest thing a high performer can do is…breathe.

This one started with my longtime friend @brettcasper , who knew me back when we were two twenty-somethings in NYC burning the candle at both ends, and also features the brilliant @melissaagnes , whose work in crisis management led her to some fascinating conclusions about regulation and leadership.

More than 25 years later, Brett and I are still talking about performance.

We just define it differently now.

“High Performers, Take a Breath” is live at Inc. ❤️
