10,000 years ago, Mammut americanum roamed the savanna-covered Yucatán Peninsula.

Today, @markinwater and I are grateful to witness its remains still frozen in time.

The story of the cenotes is millions of years in the making.
These Ice Age megafauna remains are just one small part of it.

For millions of years, the Yucatán Peninsula’s sacred cenotes filtered the region’s freshwater and sustained life. But rapid tourism growth, missing sewage infrastructure, and massive industrial developments are pouring contamination deep into the aquifer.⁠

By driving over 50,000 steel and concrete pillars straight into the cave system, construction has shattered the delicate halocline, mixing saltwater into freshwater and threatening endemic species like the blind translucent cave shrimp (Typhlatya).⁠
