In the earliest known era, Oregon was shaped geologically by volcanic activity in the Eocene epoch and massive Pleistocene floods. These floods deposited fertile sediments and sculpted features such as the Columbia River Gorge and Crater Lake’s caldera . Human habitation in what became Oregon dates back over 13,000 years, evidenced by artifacts from Fort Rock Cave and Paisley Caves . Numerous indigenous tribes settled across varied ecosystems, including the Chinook, Nez Perce, Klamath, Molalla, Cayuse, Umatilla, Bannock, and Umpqua, each developing distinct lifeways. European contact commenced in the mid-16th century when Spanish sailors charted the Pacific coast. Sir Francis Drake may have anchored near present-day Oregon in 1579 . In 1792, American Captain Robert Gray entered the Columbia River, naming it after his ship Columbia Rediviva . The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1805–06) traversed the territory, documented salmon abundance, and established encampments like Fort Clatsop . Fur traders, including those from John Jacob Astor’s Pacific Fur Company in Astoria, later advanced both American and British presence .

The 1818 Treaty of Joint Occupation allowed both the United States and Great Britain to occupy the region peacefully, but growing American settlement via the Oregon Trail in the 1840s altered the demographic and political landscape . In 1843, pioneer settlers convened at Champoeg to form a provisional government. Tensions over territory culminated in the Oregon Treaty of June 1846, which set the U.S.–Canada border at the 49th parallel .In August 1848, Congress established the Oregon Territory, encompassing areas that would become Washington, Idaho, and parts of Montana . The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 further incentivized white settlement . In December 1844 and again in a 1857 constitutional clause, the territory implemented restrictive laws: it was the only state admitted with a “whites only” exclusionary clause barring Black residents from property ownership, legal contracts, voting, and court access . taken in Oregon by @shay_m001
