This is one advantage of having portfolio-worthy projects. You can always make references to them during interviews.

It also gives you an edge to make the interview feel more like a conversation and not an interrogation.

What other ways can you leverage your projects during interviews?

P.S - Share if you got value from this video.

Why Does Programming Feel Difficult?

I once struggled to understand JavaScript, I kept learning, watch tutorials, reading JavaScript books.

Despite all my efforts at understanding the language, I still couldn’t build anything with it, not even a simple form validation.

This made me think I had an issue understanding the language and I almost gave up programming at some point.

Everything changed when I started taking another JavaScript course, that was when I realized I wasn’t the one with the issue, the materials I had been studying with previously were the issue.

I didn’t know at that time that courses or tutorials were designed with different audience in mind, and I had been studying with materials that were not meant for the audience that I belonged to.

Before paying for a course you need to first of all know where you are in your learning journey and what category of audience you belong to.

Knowing where you are and what audience you belong to would help you make better decisions when deciding what course to pay for.

Portfolio-based vs Practice-based Projects

As a developer, it is important to know that there two types of projects:

1. Portfolio-based Projects:

The ones that can be added to your portfolio.

2. Practice-based Projects:

The ones that you need to test what you’ve learned.

Before building a portfolio-based project, there are things you need to be intentional about as a frontend developer, and some of them include:

1. API integrations:

This is to let recruiters know that you have experience collaborating with backend developers.

2. Beautifully crafted responsive websites:

This is very important because it let recruiters know that you can build well crafted user interfaces that would work very well across different devices.

In my next video I’ll explain how you can come up with portfolio-worthy projects and how you can leverage on them during interviews.

Nothings annoys me like completing a front-end task and successfully integrating an API, and then getting a change in data shape that will cause me to refactor my code again.

Backend devs, this thing is very annoying. Please let it end with this year oh 🤲😅.

What other bad behaviours have you experienced as a front-end developer while working with a backend developer?

Backend developers share your experiences collaborating with front-end developers too.

We all need to collaborate better next year!

Become a CSS Pro! 🚀 Explore Top Free Courses for Mastering Responsiveness.

In my previous post I talked about the impact a non-responsive website could have on user experience and sales!

And then we agreed to balance our skills by investing time in mastering CSS before diving into JavaScript. 🌐✨

In this post, I’ll be sharing three different free courses that would help you master responsiveness.

1️⃣ Responsive CSS Tutorial: Learn
Responsive Web Design by
Scrimba

This course at the top of the list, it’s a free course hosted on YouTube.

The focus of this course it to get you comfortable making responsive websites. It covers the following:
- CSS units
- Flexbox basics
- Media queries
- How to approach a layout

2️⃣ Responsive Web Design Tutorials by Net Ninja

This course comes second on the list, and it’s also hosted on YouTube.

In this responsive design course you’ll learn all the core essentials of responsive development that you need to go on and make mobile-friendly sites.

You’ll be looking at the view-port, media queries, drop-down menu’s and responsive image.

3️⃣ Mobile-First Responsive Build (with CSS Grid) by Net Ninja

In this mini-series, you’ll learn how to build a responsive website using a mobile-first approach — developing websites for mobiles first and then extending the design to larger screens.

P.S: If you found this valuable, share it to help others! Thank you 🙌

Why is CSS underrated by Frontend Developers? 🤔

CSS is often underestimated, with developers rushing to JavaScript.

Let’s change that narrative.

A website isn’t just functional; it needs to captivate users visually.

Picture navigating an e-commerce site, zooming in and out endlessly — imagine the impact on user experience and sales!

Balance your skills; invest time in mastering CSS before diving into JavaScript. 🌐✨

P.S: If you found this valuable, share it to help others! Thank you 🙌

After conquering JavaScript, finding the right React course was a challenge. I realized you don’t always need the latest course—just start, learn, and build!

My first React course wasn’t updated, but the teaching style mattered more. Two weeks in, I tackled a music player project, facing challenges but making progress. 🎵

During a nerve-wracking interview, I realized I needed more depth. Swapped courses for a better fit, emphasizing understanding over speed. 🔄

Lesson learned: a course should empower you to teach others. Now, it’s a criteria before I invest. 📚

Ever faced a similar dilemma? Share your journey below! 👇

How do you actually know when to move from JavaScript to a framework?

There are basically four things in JavaScript that you need to learn before picking up a framework.

1. The Basics
2. DOM Manipulation
3. Asynchronous JavaScript
4. Object Oriented Programming

In this video, I’ll be explaining in details what you’ll be learning in these four major categories and why they’re important.

“Var” and “let” in JavaScript are like two friends with a small but important difference.

Imagine them as containers for information, but the rules for these containers are a bit different.

Let’s talk about “var” first.

It’s like a container that you can use almost anywhere, but it has a rule.

If you put something (a variable) in this container inside a function, you can’t take it out of that function.

It’s like a secret code that only that function knows.

Now, meet “let”. It’s another container, but it has a different rule.

If you put something in this container inside a “function”, an “if statement”, or a “loop” (anything with curly braces), you can’t take it out of those curly braces.

It’s like a secret code, but this time, only that part of the code knows it.

So, the big difference is in the rules - “var” has function rules, and “let” has block rules.

Block rules mean that the secret code stays within the curly braces.

I used to think that everything with curly braces was a block, but now I know that “var” plays by different rules.

If you’re still puzzled or have questions, feel free to ask below.

And if you need help with website design or development, send me a direct message!

Recently I was asked if React Native can be used for both frontend and backend mobile development?

React Native is a JavaScript frontend framework for mobile development. It can not used for backend development.
