LEGEND UNWRITTEN KICKSTARTER
🌘7-21 OCT🌒
Writer of urban fantasy horror - X-Files vibes with better flashlights
Out now: MYTHOS UNBOUND
🇳🇿/🇦🇺

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hello! Have we met? I'm Shayla and I write urban fantasy that feels like genre TV from the early 2000s - think X-Files, early Supernatural, Fringe, Buffy and Grimm. I specialise in stories with:

🩵platonic leads - romance may be on the cards for one or both leads, but not with each other. I write siblings, colleagues, friends and master/apprentice bonds, but generally not a central romance. Most of the loves of our lives are not our romantic partners and I relish exploring the angst, baggage, trust issues, loyalty, intimacy and growth that occurs just as naturally in these connections

💜mixed genre and media - you'll find my urban fantasy books packed with elements of horror, thriller, police procedural and science fiction, just like my favourite TV shows. I also have a prequel book written and formatted as a DnD-style choose-your-own-adventure novella that you play with a D20! I have a PhD in fanfiction as play-based creative writing pedagogy and take a bricolage approach to genre, format and media wherever I can

If any of that resonates with you, check out the Shadow Kin Chronicles, starting with Mythos Unbound, on KU! taken in BOOKSTA by @shaylawritesmagic

I wrote an urban fantasy novel for nostalgic genre fans like me who don't think reading should come with less suspense, excitement or gory monster fights than a good TV show. Book 1, Mythos Unbound, out everywhere; Book 2, Legend Unwritten, currently on Kickstarter. Get it before the campaign ends 21st Oct! taken in BOOKSTA by @shaylawritesmagic

My bags are packed and I'm on my way to @onceuponafairytaleaus in Campbelltown! Can't wait to meet fantasy readers and hang out with incredible authors starting tonight at the VIP evening and into tomorrow on the convention floor - see you there!

For those who don't know me, I write urban fantasy horror in the same vein as The X-Files or Supernatural, with:

🌒found family
🌓multiple mythologies
🌔platonic leads (siblings)
🌕grounded magic system
🌖profiler FMC
🌗scholarly monster-hunter MMC
🌘monsters & mysteries
🌑all the banter

I also wrote a DnD-style prequel that's like a choose-your-own-adventure novella you play with a D20, to give you an idea of the level of nerdy we are sitting at here, and I'll have that and more at my table, number 75, tomorrow at Once Upon a Fairytale. taken in THE CUBE - Campbelltown Convention & Entertainment Centre by @shaylawritesmagic

ARC Review
5 stars 🌟

A big thanks to Shayla the author for the honour of receiving and reading the ARC copy of this book. I greatly appreciate it!!

The continuation of this series plays out like a crime show that's how well written it flows and reads.

The fantasy elements that incorporate into this world build on nicely from the other books in the series. The storyline was fun, entertaining, jaw breaking scenes at times and the unknown of where it was going allows for a fast paced read and a readers reactions to be realistic.

Keep watch for when this is available the start of December and also grab the other books in the series so you can read them all for the full experience of the world.

Thanks again the Shayla for the ARC copy and for the fun times on the Steet Team!!

You can also find my Review on my Storygraph @eviereadseveryday and Goodreads Evie Pavone

As well it will be included on my October Wrap Up upcoming in November on my youtube channel. by @shaylawritesmagic

What a fabulous start. Thanks everyone who has jumped on board for this early win - two minutes faster than Mythos Unbound! You can find the leenk in my stories or b!0 by @shaylawritesmagic

The countdown is very much on for the Legend Unwritten Kickstarter campaign! Since it's a manual process of "click here to go live" I'm aiming for somewhere between 7:30am and 10am AEST (basically whenever I can pin my preschooler's attention down with toast or playdough for a sufficient window of time) but I'd be so grateful for anyone who plans to get the book to jump on it early as the Kickstarter platform favours projects that fund quickly - thus putting it in front of other, new users who have never crossed paths with the Shadow Kin before.

Legend Unwritten is book 2 of the Shadow Kin Chronicles, an urban fantasy horror series of novels designed to feel like an episode of The X-Files or Supernatural - fast paced, dark, scary, and unexpectedly funny at off-beat moments. The romance is low, the body count is high, with monsters from different mythologies creeping around every corner and leaving a trail of crime scenes weird and gory enough for FBI profiler Evie Bryant to call in her mythology scholar brother Finn as a consultant. But Finn is a monster hunter with supernatural abilities he can't explain, and Evie is... well, perhaps less normal than she would like to be. In book 2, we're hunting witches. The bad kind. The kind the Brothers Grimm warned us about.

Sprayed edges and foil cover edition coming right up! See you over at the Kickstarter in the morning! taken in BOOKSTA by @shaylawritesmagic
