“Damnit, I cracked.” She looked at me as she came offstage.

What do you say to the person who voiced the role 30 years ago?

“I know, but I don’t think the audience minded.”
She leaned in, “they didn’t pay to hear me mess up.” She smiled and walked to her dressing room.
“Next time just hire a pop star! They’ll hit all the notes!”

I walk Danny to his finale entrance on the other side of the Bowl. I cue all the stage left curtain call entrances, and I head back to stage right. Encore is in full swing. Encore is a hit. Alek cues “No One Live Forever, which Danny added in for Fred, because Fred mentioned it was his favorite Oingo Boingo song. Encore ends.

I don’t see her. I go to her dressing room and knock.

“Hey, Catherine. How are you doing, you know, post crack?”
“Oh, I’m fine. Do you want to have some wine? LET’S HAVE SOME WINE!”

Did she just slip in the Moira voice?

She points to the mini fridge. “They gave me the good stuff.” She gets the stack of plastic cups and pours. We cheers. We talk about Beetlejuice 2 and how the strikes impacted shooting the final scene left to film. We talk about the state of tv and film. She tells me her son and his girlfriend and her friends came to the show and she’s so excited to have them here. We bring them backstage. The “kids” are sweet as can be. She bartends for the small party now happening in her dressing room.

I only worked with her once, but it was enough to know exactly who she was. 💔 taken in Hollywood Bowl by @shaynapenn

It only took infinity tries, but after a hellacious few months, perfecting a hair toss feels like a cute victory.

Happy Trails to the OG herself, @jessiesheltonofficial!!!

Jessie is the most amazing human, and has been with Hadestown since its original NYTW days. We met working on A Servant of Two Masters with Sonnet Rep, and re-met working on the Pre-Broadway Lab, where she pulled double duty as Eurdice and a Fate. She is the last OG from the Broadway cast to depart, and the Underworld will never be the same.

I've been reflecting a lot on my life lately. A decade ago, I called a giant floating ship my home and got to see my sibling in port every weekend, and I got to call shows with all kinds of fun languages on headset!

I don't miss wearing headsets, but I miss the thrill of a live musical. That relationship between an audience and the people putting on the show is a beautiful relationship, and it changes every night.

In the last 10 years I've since made it to all 7 continents, lived in even more cities and states, and I've made even more friends around the world.

Life is chaotic, but life is beautiful. ⚓ by @shaynapenn
