Unofficial home of top level field hockey in Scotland
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A top-four clash at Bothwell Castle takes the spotlight this week while the rest of the table continues to take shape.

The feature fixture sees Uddingston welcome Edinburgh University in a meeting between two of last season’s top four. Uni won both league encounters last year, but their 2-1 away victory was a close affair, underlining how difficult Uddy are to beat on home turf. The hosts arrive with maximum points from four games, although their perfect league record took a hit in the Scottish Cup on Sunday as they were knocked out by Clydesdale. Uni, meanwhile, sit on 7 points after missing a fixture due to the EHL and dropping points in a 2-2 draw with Hillhead. With Uddy looking to bounce back from their cup exit and Uni eager to close the gap at the top, this promises to be a compelling contest.

WAT v CLD (Peffermill): Watsonians will fancy their chances at home as they look to maintain their perfect league record. Dale, however, arrive full of confidence after knocking Uddingston out of the Cup and will be keen to build on that result.

WWC v GMH (Auchenhowie): Western continue to set the pace at the top and will be strong favourites. Menzieshill picked up a welcome win over Carnegie last weekend, though, so will arrive with their tails up.

DCA v IVL (Woodmill): Carnegie remain without a point and will see this as an important chance to get their campaign moving, especially against Inverleith who are also struggling. This will be a valuable opportunity to tally some points.

ESM v KLB (ESM): ESM have recovered well from their opening-day defeat and sit among the early pace-setters. Kelburne have shown signs of improvement since returning to the top flight, but face a difficult trip against an in-form home side.

HHD v GRA (Windyedge): Hillhead have been unfortunate to collect just two points despite some close encounters, including their draw with Uni. Grange, meanwhile, are still searching for their first points of the season and will be desperate to turn their fortunes around. taken in Uddingston Hockey Club by @shdb.official

Women's Premiership coverage is here!

Edinburgh University vs Watsonians - 3pm - Peffermill
The feature fixture in the Women's Premiership this week is Edinburgh University vs Watsonians. Both teams have experienced significant change over the summer with new coaches in place and new players joining their ranks.

Watsonians will be keen to maintain their encouraging start under David Stott this weekend and have a perfect record so far with high scoring clean sheet wins against Western Wildcats (6-0) and league newcomers Gordonians (9-0) respectively.

Dan Coultas’s students will be looking to build momentum after getting off the mark last weekend. They suffered an 8-2 defeat on the opening day to preseason favourites Clydesdale Western, however, they rebounded with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Hillhead.

Can the students stop Sarah Jamieson who netted five goals last weekend in Aberdeen?

Grange Vs GHK - 1.30pm - Fettes
Grange welcome GHK to the capital in an early test of both teams ambitions to reach the top 4 playoffs. Grange are currently undefeated but will be frustrated by letting points slip from a winning position last weekend while GHK will be looking to bounce back from a midweek defeat against Clydesdale Western.

University of St Andrews Vs Hillhead - 1.30pm - Saints Sport
Hillhead travel to St Andrews looking to pickup a second win of the season, while the students will be looking to add three points to their two draws so far. Recent seasons results would tend to favour the students but is an upset on the cards on the east coast.

Glasgow University Vs Clydesdale Western - 4.30pm - Top Windyedge
Glasgow University host the preseason favourites at Top Windyedge. CW are in thrilling form, having shut out GHK and blitzed Edinburgh Uni in recent weeks.

Western Wildcats Vs Uddingston - 3.30pm - Auchenhowie
Western Wildcats return from a two week break from action to face Uddingston at Auchenhowie. Uddy fired seven past GU last weekend and will look to take advantage of some rustiness in the Wildcats camp.

Western extend their lead at the top of the Premiership, whilst Carnegie and Grange remain at the foot of the table. Clydesdale knock Uddy out in round 1 of the cup.

In the weekend’s highlight fixture, Uddy managed to claim a vital three points over Grange in the capital. A tightly contested affair, with Grange looking to earn their first points of this year's campaign. It wasn’t to be, however, and the result means Uddy keep pace with Western at the top of the Premiership. With Uni and Western to play in the next couple of weeks time will tell if they have what it takes to stick it out at the top.

With Edinburgh Uni playing in Europe, Western had a chance to extend their lead at the top over Watsonians and Edinburgh University. Away to Clydesdale on paper looked a sticky fixture, however. It was a closely matched contest in the first half with the score at 2-0 at half time. The second half belonged to Western, notching four more goals to claim a comfortable victory and return to the top of the table.

Hillhead were defeated 4-3 by ESM in what could be a key result for the top six standings. The game went back and forth, with Hillhead being in the lead three times! It was ESM, however, that claimed the all important three points, which barring disaster, should secure their place in the top half come the new year.

At the other end of the table, Inverleith travelled to Linwood in search of their first points of the season. With Kelburne three points ahead this was a key opportunity for the Purple Robes to draw level. Given both teams defensive records it wasn’t surprising this one was a high scoring affair. Inverleith coming out narrowly on top with a 4-3 victory to go clear of the relegation spots.

Finally, Menzieshill huffed and puffed their way to three points at home to Carnegie. They may have been expecting a more comfortable afternoon but three points nonetheless keep their top six hopes alive. As for Carnegie, their premiership survival is looking less and less likely as the weeks go by.

In the cup it was dominant wins for Hillhead and Watsonians. Uddingston, however, experienced their first loss of the season to Clydesdale and will enter the plate. by @shdb.official

The Premiership returns for week 4 with the top of the table beginning to take shape, while several sides are still searching for their first points of the campaign.

The feature fixture sees Grange welcome Uddingston, with the two sides having shared plenty of competitive encounters in recent seasons. On current form, however, the visitors will arrive as clear favourites. Grange are still searching for their first point after three defeats, although the margins have steadily narrowed since their 5-2 opening-day loss to Dale. Their subsequent 3-1 defeat to Edinburgh Uni and narrow 3-2 loss to ESM were against two of the league’s strongest sides, offering encouragement despite the results. Uddy, meanwhile, sit on a perfect nine points, with new signing Euan Gilmour already on six goals. On the whole, despite recent form, the home side should not be written off though it will be a tough ask against an Uddy side running hot.

CLD v WWC (Titwood): Clydesdale face a daunting test against league leaders Western. Dale suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend against Uddingston, while Western continued their perfect start with a 9-3 win over Inverleith.

GMH v DCA (Dawson Park): Both sides will see this as a valuable opportunity to get their seasons moving. Menzieshill have just one point from three games, while Carnegie remain pointless following a 5-3 defeat to Kelburne last weekend.

IVL v KLB (Edinburgh Academy): Inverleith remain without a point after three difficult opening fixtures, while Kelburne arrive with their first win under their belts following victory over Carnegie. The visitors will fancy their chances of adding to their tally.

HHD v ESM (Windyedge): Hillhead will look to build on their thrilling 2-2 draw with reigning champions Edinburgh Uni, while ESM arrive in good form after edging Grange 3-2. With just two points separating the sides, this should be a closely fought encounter.

A huge weekend of results in the Men's Premiership this weekend.

Kelburne got off the mark as they defeated fellow Premiership newbies Carnegie in a 5-3 win at the ON-X. This could prove to be a vital three points in the context of relegation. This leaves Carnegie at the foot of the table on zero points and a negative 24 GD after just three games. Premiership survival is looking like a tough assignment already.

In the shock of the weekend, Premiership champions Edinburgh Uni were held to a draw at Peffermill by Hillhead, thanks to a late penalty stroke conversion from Euan Menzies. By all accounts, Edinburgh University struggled to convert without talisman Jamie Golden and ultimately were unable to find a solution. With the EHL looming this week they will be hoping to pick up form fast.

This left the door open for Western to go top of the table. A 9-3 win away to Inverleith was the scoreline for them, with Andrew McAllister notching three. This makes it three on the bounce for the Auchenhowie outfit, they top the table on GD, as they look to regain the title from Uni.

Watsonians also took advantage of Uni’s surprising slip up as they too have collected maximum points from their first three games. Once again Charlie Jack was the man to do the damage with another hattrick in a 3-0 win against Menzieshill. This puts the Edinburgh side second, just a goal behind Western.

Uddingston are the other side to be keeping pace at the top as they defeated Clydesdale 2-0 at Titwood, despite finishing the match with 10 men following a red card. Dale threw everything at Uddy, taking their keeper off in an attempt to convert with a two man advantage. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t able to break down a stubborn Uddingston defence.

Finally it was Grange v ESM as the two Edinburgh sides went head to head in what could be a key result for top 6 aspirations. It was ESM who managed to get over the line in a tight 3-2 scoreline as they leapfrog Dale into 5th position. Grange, on the other hand, are languishing down the bottom end of the table with no points in their first three - it could be a long way back for them. by @shdb.official

Two games in, and this year's Premiership table is beginning to take somewhat predictable shape. Last season’s top four already occupy those spaces again this season, and the top 6/relegation fight is beginning to form.

This week’s highlight fixture features the two Premiership newbies who have both had concerning starts in the big time.

In fairness, Carnegie and Kelburne have both had difficult starts to the season, facing teams who will have their sights set on the top end of this season's table. However, Carnegie are rock bottom on 0 points and have a mountain to climb after last weekends 16-0 defeat to ESM leaving them on a -22 GD after just two games. This could prove costly later in the season. Kelburne are also yet to register a point, but are ten goals better off with a -12 GD. Neither side have managed to notch their first goal of the season, surely this weekend at least one or both will get off the mark.

Both teams will go into this weekend knowing this could be a rare opportunity to pick up points. You would have to say Kelburne, with the home advantage, go in as favourites.

Elsewhere:
CLD v UDD (Titwood): Dale will have their tails up ahead of a huge match v Uddy following their great start. This should give us a true reflection of their top 6 credentials.

UOE v HHD (Peffermill): Edinburgh Uni look to continue their strong start to their title defence. With a potential injury to set piece talisman Jamie Golden, could this give Hillhead some hope?

GRA v ESM (MES/Fettes TBC): Can Grange finally get their season started with their first points? This is always a closely fought affair but ESM will fancy themselves after last weekend's 16 goals!

GMH v WAT (Dawson Park): Never an easy place to go, but Watsonians will fancy their chances of continuing their perfect start to proceedings and keeping pace at the top.

IVL v WWC (Edinburgh Academy): A daunting prospect for Inverleith after last week’s heavy defeat. However, with a couple of injury scares for Western’s front men, they’ll be hopeful of a resurgence. taken in ON-X Linwood by @shdb.official

Five teams now sit on six points at the top of the Premiership after another weekend of high-scoring action.

The highlight fixture certainly delivered as Hillhead and Clydesdale battled it out in a seven-goal derby. Ultimately, it was Dale who landed the final sting, scoring in the closing minutes to snatch all three points away from home. Clydesdale now have maximum points from their opening two games, while Hillhead will be disappointed to remain on just one point having come very close to taking more from both of their opening fixtures.

ESM bounced back from their opening-day defeat in emphatic fashion, thumping Dunfermline Carnegie 16-0 at home. Carnegie remain without a goal after two games, while ESM’s attacking display saw Belotti find the net four times and Thomson claim a hat-trick, moving both up the early-season goalscoring charts.

Grange were unable to rise to the challenge against Edinburgh University, falling to a 3-1 defeat. The result leaves Grange in unusual territory having lost their opening two fixtures, while Uni continue their winning streak.

Watsonians enjoyed a comfortable afternoon against local opponents Inverleith, running out 8-0 winners. Daan Schenck led the way with a hat-trick, while the remaining five goals were shared among the team as Watsonians subjected the purple robes to another goalless weekend.

Uddingston took a 4-0 victory over Grove Menzieshill. After a goalless first half, new signing Euan Gilmour took control with a hat-trick, while Ewan Hutchinson added the other as Uddy kept another clean sheet.

Western Wildcats made it back-to-back 6-0 victories - this time through six different goalscorers - with a comfortable win over newly promoted Kelburne who haven’t been able to record a goal in their opening fixtures. The clean sheet means the Wildcats, along with Watsonians and Uddy, are also yet to concede this season. by @shdb.official

After an action-packed opening weekend, the Premiership returns with a Glasgow derby taking centre stage.

The highlight fixture sees Hillhead welcome Clydesdale in a battle for local bragging rights. Dale recorded an impressive win over Grange last weekend while Hillhead only managed a draw away to Menzieshill. With both sides likely to have their sights set on the Top 6, this could prove an important early-season encounter, and form suggests it will be close. Last season, Hillhead won comfortably on the road before being defeated at home, helped by a brace from Dale’s Kyle Bannerman. Hillhead will be hoping that this time round home advantage will play its part. Expect plenty of sting as Dale leave the hive to face the hornets!

ESM host Dunfermline Carnegie with both sides looking to get their seasons up and running after each conceding 6 last weekend. ESM arrive pointless after defeat to Edinburgh Uni, while Carnegie were unable to find the net in their loss to Western. Both will be looking for a response and their first points of the campaign.

Grange face Edinburgh Uni in a fixture which has historically been tightly contested, although recent meetings have increasingly favoured the students. Uni made an impressive start with six goals against ESM, while Grange will be hoping to bounce back from their defeat to Clydesdale.

Western Wildcats host Kelburne in a fixture that was once one of the biggest in the Premiership calendar. However, with this being only the second fixture since Kelburne’s return to the top-flight, they face a daunting task against last season’s runners-up, who opened their campaign with a convincing 6-0 victory.

Watsonians keep things local as they welcome fellow Edinburgh side Inverleith. The hosts made a flying start with a 6-0 win over Kelburne, while Inverleith will be looking to bounce back after their 3-0 defeat to Uddingston.

Finally, Uddingston welcome Grove Menzieshill. Uddy have won two of their last three league meetings with Menzieshill, with the Dundee side taking the other. Can Menzieshill level the head-to-head on Saturday? A tough task at a notoriously tricky venue. taken in Ghk Hockey by @shdb.official

Goals galore in the 26/27 Premiership’s opening weekend!

Premiership champions Edinburgh Uni made a strong start against local rivals ESM despite an early scare. Uni found themselves 1 down early in the match but, typically, Jamie Golden was the catalyst for the comeback with four to start off his campaign. In the end, a well earned 6-2 win.

Last season’s runners up Western faced newly promoted Carnegie in Dunfermline. Fraser Moran bagged a hattrick to get the Cats up and running in what was a dominant display. Carnegie won’t be hinging their survival hopes on these games, however, and could prove a sticky side at home.

Watsonians equalled Western’s goal tally against the other Premiership newbies Kelburne. Charlie Jack was the man for Watsonians as he, too, notched three goals making the top goalscorers chart an exciting race already.

Uddingston huffed and puffed and eventually ran out 3-0 winners away to Inverleith. Uddy have once again made several additions to this season’s line up and will be hoping to add more goals as they look to build on last season’s 4th place finish.

In perhaps the surprise of the weekend, Clydesdale ran out comfortable 5-2 winners over Grange. Dale struggled last season - particularly against the top 6 sides - but a statement win highlights their own top 6 credentials. As for Grange, this is a blow to their top 6 ambitions as they continue their rebuilding journey.

Finally, in the only draw of the weekend, Hillhead left Dundee with a share of the spoils. This was always likely to be a tight affair with both teams hoping to make a top 6 push this season. Hillhead perhaps looked the more likely to clinch the 3 points but a hard earned draw, nevertheless. by @shdb.official

The Premiership returns this weekend with a new season and plenty of intrigue across the opening round of fixtures.

Clydesdale host Grange at a newly-laid Titwood pitch in what has historically been a close encounter between two well-matched sides. Both sides will be hoping to improve on last season’s campaigns as Dale look to make home advantage count from the outset.

The Edinburgh derby sees newly crowned champions Edinburgh University welcome ESM to Peffermill. The students are looking particularly strong this year, with a number of new signings bolstering their squad as they build towards their Euro Hockey League campaign in October. ESM, meanwhile, will be hoping to make a statement against the reigning champions.

Dunfermline Carnegie make their return to the top flight as they host last season’s runners-up Western Wildcats at the DLC. It is a daunting first assignment for the newly promoted side, with Western likely to have their sights firmly set on another title challenge.

Kelburne also return to the Premiership and face a tough reintroduction against Watsonians at Linwood. The Edinburgh side will be hoping to build on last season’s third-place finish and start the campaign with three points on the road.

Grove Menzieshill and Hillhead meet in Dundee, with both sides looking to make a strong start and put pressure on the top-end of the table. Both of last year’s league fixtures served up draws so it’s undoubtedly going to be close.

Finally, Inverleith welcome Uddingston to Edinburgh. Having stumbled through last season’s relegation battle, Inverleith will be keen to put that behind them, but face a Uddingston side with high aspirations after finishing fourth and reaching the playoffs last season. by @shdb.official
