How have Brandon and I lived around Louisville this long and never had a date night at Uptown Cafe?!

We love finding places where we can sit down, order way too much food, actually take our time and just enjoy being together, and Uptown was exactly that kind of night.

We started with cocktails and the onion rings, Brandon got the shrimp, we had the steak which was absolutely superb, and then there was the chicken tortilla soup.

THE SOUP. 😂

I’m not kidding when I say I would drive back over there just for a bowl of it. I’ve had a lot of chicken tortilla soup in my life and this one was different.

And as good as the food was, the service matched it. Our waiter was absolutely fantastic, the entire staff was so welcoming, and it was just one of those dinners where everything felt easy and unrushed.

Also, if you’re looking for an excuse for a weeknight date night, they have half price bottles of wine Monday through Friday in the bar and on the patio, plus free valet parking. 🍷

And because no date night should end without dessert, we finished with that chocolate cake. 🤎

Uptown has been a Highlands staple for decades, and after finally having a date night there, now we get it.

Already planning what I’m ordering next time.

Okay fine. It’s the soup. 😂

I look at my son now and see this almost grown man who drives himself to school, has his own life, his own friends, his own plans and is slowly figuring out who he wants to be.

But I also still see every version of him that came before this one.

The little hand that used to reach for mine. The voice yelling “Mom” from the other room. The years when I was his whole world and he needed me for just about everything.

And now here we are. Senior year.

This strange season where I’m realizing that I did my job right if he needs me a little less.

That’s the part of motherhood nobody really prepares you for. You spend their entire childhood teaching them how to walk away from you. How to make their own decisions. How to build a life. How to be okay without you right beside them.

And somehow you’re supposed to be proud and heartbroken at the exact same time.

Our relationship is changing, but I think that might be one of my favorite parts too. I don’t just get to watch my son grow up. I get to know the person he’s becoming.

So this senior year, I’m trying really hard not to spend all of it mourning the lasts.

I want to be here for them.

Every ordinary car ride. Every story he tells me. Every dinner at home. Every time he walks through the door and I get another day of having him under this roof.

Because I know what’s coming.

And I know this is exactly what I raised him to do.

But man… I’m going to miss this version of us. ❤️

I’m always looking for ways to make life a little easier without feeling like I’m cutting corners, especially when it comes to feeding my family.

Maybe I knew so fast because I had spent my whole life learning what love wasn’t.

I knew what it felt like when a man didn’t show up.

I knew what inconsistency felt like.
I knew what disappointment felt like.
I knew what it was like to wonder if you mattered enough for someone to stay.

So when I met Brandon, I noticed the things other people might have overlooked.

He showed up.

He was consistent.
He was kind.
He made me feel chosen.
There was never a question of where I stood with him.

And maybe at 19 I didn’t have the words for any of that yet.

I just knew he felt different.

I thought I was falling in love with him fast, but looking back now, I think a part of me simply recognized something I had been missing my entire life.

Safety.

Twenty six years later, he is still the man who shows up.

For me.
For our son.
For our family.

And there is something incredibly healing about watching the man you chose become everything you once wished a man could be.

So yes, I knew pretty fast.

Turns out, sometimes your heart recognizes home before you even understand why. 🤍
