💚🔥What NomadFIRE looks like -

I can’t afford retirement in Singapore but I can Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) in other lower cost of living countries. Tried and tested for 2 years IRL as a full-time nomad.

💚Currently I’m nomading in Japan.
Accommodation- S$880/month for 15sqm 1 bed in a typical sharehouse for foreigners and int’l students with shared showers. Other options - Sakura House, J-stay, Oakhouse, Mooovin.jp, Atinn.jp etc for monthly stays.
Local eSIM - S$20
Transport - S$150-200
Food - S$8-10/ meal x 2 x30 ~ around S$600+/month
Temples - S$5-8/ ticket
Gym/yoga - S$16-25/session
Coworking- Free Wifi is hard to find though, best to WFH or pay for a coworking space. In Kyoto, I recommend @digitalnomadkyoto, Fabcafe and Ace Hotel lobby. Otherwise, there’s Cafe Veloce, Doutor and Starbucks.
Average monthly costs -S$2500-3500/month

💚Other fixed expenses -
SG phone line
SG storage locker
SG health insurance
Nomad insurance - expensive but a must !!!

💚NomadFIRE strategy - Cashflow FIRE > making sure my Income > Expenses
> no debt
> budgeting for 1 person
> cash buffer for emergencies

💚Rental income has been the most steady - prefer LT tenants. SG housing rental market seems to be stable.
💚Income investment account has appreciated and so has dividend payouts > doubled in 10 years. Due to Singapore’s tax structure, I pay 0% on dividends.
💚Overseas property rental- Currently stable but high risk. It is currently paying for itself.

💚Going forward, I’m doubling down on income investing through dividend stocks and income funds, which I prefer.

✨When people ask me how I’m so brave to solo travel and do life alone, then I remember I basically raised myself - I wrote letters to try and fix my parents’ relationship at age 8, was the joker in the family to ease the mood, dressed older at age 16 (but completely disassociated), found a full board Uni scholarship to escape home life at age 19, learned to cook from my college boyfriend, moved to 3 different countries alone under the age of 30, and finally in mid-40s, I learned how to process my emotions and soothe myself and semi-retired.

✨Hyperindependence was the default way to cope, making it even harder to want an actual relationship with others. Add in a highly sensitive nervous system, being easily triggered by others, an enmeshed family and I can tell you that being around most people is hard now.

✨I used to think that there was something wrong with me for being alone. I used to be envious of people who can just socialise with random people easily (I used to be this person) and tried to fit in but now I honestly think being alone is the best way for me to manage my life. (Friends have told me I’m too independent to date and I can’t lie, it’s kinda true. I don’t believe in marriage, barely understand why people are in relationships and would also happily be a nun.)

If there’s anyone who can do it, it’s me cos I’ve done it since childhood.

✨It’s giving K period drama vibes!

💖First time wearing a traditional Hanbok dress in Jeju, Korea, thanks to Hanok Hotel Hallagung in Seogwipo. As guests of the hotel, we were able to rent a Hanbok outfit with accessories for free! You wear the Hanbok on top of your clothes and you can totally see my sneakers underneath 😂.

💖Apparently pink is the popular colour for Hanboks and it took me a while to get used to wearing something so pink and girly. 😅😅 I normally wouldn’t do this sort of thing unless it’s free!

💖Our hotel also served as a great backdrop with its traditional Hanok-style houses and pretty garden with Hallabong oranges 🍊! Very Jeju style and the pics turned out nicely.

💖Wasn’t expecting to go to Jeju Island this time but I’ve always wanted to go! And so, I extended my Korea trip to meet up with friends from Singapore 🤗Flights from Seoul were around $100 and they have direct flights from SG!

✨Tips - Rent a car and stay in different parts of the island
June is rainy, have wet weather plans!
Cafes often have a min. order for each person
Try food like grilled fish, abalone porridge, black pork and hallabong oranges
Some places like Mt. Hallasan needs planning and you should try to go early

Where to go Shopping in Seoul, Korea 🇰🇷🛍️-

📍Seong-Su - Giant industrial warehouses converted into retail stores, crazy art installations, pop ups, retail activations. Don’t forget to try the salt bread and visit Haus Nowhere for the Gentle Monster flagship store and huge, futuristic art pieces.

📍Garosu-Gil in Gangam
Higher-end standalone boutiques and vintage stores like COS, Non-Fiction, Low Classic

📍Starfield Coex mall for brands like Massimo Dutti, Zara Home, Muji, Uniqlo, Shoopen, Adidas, ChiChor. Also linked to Hyundai department store.

📍Myeongdong shopping street for High Street brands like Musinsa, Nyunyu, Line Friends etc. Great for souvenirs and cosmetics. The two-storey Olive Young flagship store was mobbed by tourists, even at closing time. There were 70+ people in the check out line trying to pay for bags of cosmetics including me. (I do not know how the staff close that store every night.) Some shops close quite late, around 10.30pm or so! Also super close to Lotte Department store.

💖Shopping was top notch! Most retail stores across the world are kinda dead but Seoul was popping…!! Many stores were PACKED mostly with tourists. Most of the staff could speak English and sometimes Chinese/Japanese fairly well. Bring your passport to get tax free prices. Needless to say, my budget was blown in Korea, mostly on cosmetics 💄😅!

🇰🇷💖For a huge capital city, Seoul didn’t seem so crowded and crazy even for me ! I really enjoyed wandering the different neighbourhoods, walking or taking the buses and trains and trying different experiences like the jjimjilbang/sauna.

💖Cafes and shops were on a different level. There were also many parks and green spots to chill at, so the city didn’t feel too chaotic.

💖Here are my recommendations:

📍Gwangjang market - I stayed very close by and came here a lot for the food. You can sit at the stalls and order typical Korean food like japchae, tteokpokki, kimbap etc. My fave were the snacks like savoury pancakes and red bean donuts 🍩

📍Cheonggyecheon stream - it stretches right through the city, below road level, it’s open 24 hours and safe. I saw so many people running and walking here, even at night

📍Cafe Pokpo and Ansan mountain - ok the waterfall is fake but the hiking trail is super pleasant and you get nice views of the city

📍Bongeunsa Temple - a quiet Buddhist temple opposite the Starfield Coex Mall

📍Ikseon-dong neighbourhood- so many Instagrammable cafes in traditional hanok houses. I went to Rain Report Rainbow, where it’s basically raining at the cafe

📍Spa Rex - a 24 hour Jjimjilbang/ Korean spa close to Dongdaemun Plaza. Did the baths, Full Body scrub and enjoyed the dry saunas. You can spend the whole day here.

📍Bukchon Hanok village - quite touristy as a traditional village but great for photo taking

📍Seoul City Wall Trail and Naksan Park - fantastic views of the city along the old city wall if you keep going further up. There are also a bunch of cafes that’s great for sunset and people also come up at night for the skyline views !

📍Chatteul - of course, I had to visit a traditional Korean teahouse. I had the Lotus leaf tea with Korean sweets (cookies coated with honey, puffed rice treats and dried jujubes). I liked that they had a lot of non-caffeinated and herbal teas and some sweets were mostly made from rice.

💖Even with a week-long trip, I feel like I barely scratched the surface. But still surprised how much I enjoyed this Seoul city trip !

💗Probably the BEST Experience I’ve done this year ! Flew to Seoul to try the Full Package of Colour and Body Analysis, Makeup and Styling with @colorlab_yejin at @m.colorlab_global

💕Turns out I totally typed myself wrong as a Dark Autumn. I’m a Soft or Light Spring, which is about pastels and lighter colours in warm tones and lower contrast!!

💕Even my makeup needed a boost with pink blush (I’ve been going for bronzer) and lip gloss. She even taught me Korean make up secrets like highlighting my under eye bags and curled my lashes with small burnt wooden sticks!

💓She also measured my whole body and I’m a Wave type which is similar to a Pear shape. My best silhouettes are fit and flare, high waists, adding balance to my upper body with jackets and tops with sophisticated details. Wave type is also more elegant -they recommended certain fabrics that would also suit me.

💞Then I was styled in this new look with lots of warm whites, lighter colours, jackets, and small bags. It was probably quite different from what I normally wear but that’s the whole point of a styling session. I really enjoyed it!!

💖It was super comprehensive- I even had booklets detailing what silhouettes and clothes suit me including necklines, hemlines, eyewear shapes, hair colours, hair styles, eyebrow shapes etc. And of course, the correct makeup shades, which I went to buy from Olive Young.

💕I’ve been confused and going through a lot lately, doing a proper style analysis has helped me understand how to put together a proper wardrobe and shopping is easier now!

🫶I left so I could finally process my past and the generational trauma that I had to bear.

🙏Home felt suffocating, full of negativity, criticism, deep unspoken hurt, trauma being passed down over generations (bcos ‘this was how things are done’), guilt trips, expectations and conditional affection. I never felt comfortable there.

✨As a solo traveller overseas, no one really knew me and moving elsewhere meant starting from scratch as a nobody.

🙏 It was liberating but my past continued to haunt me until I dealt with it and tried my best to let it go.

💗I left looking for peace and ended up loving myself. As an adult, I learned how to protect myself from things I had no control over as a kid. I learned that it was okay to be selfish about my needs and want things to be better and different for myself. TBH, the unspoken emotional and psychological damage caused rifts that are still too difficult to overcome.

💗After more than 2.5 years of travelling, I’ve realised that I’m better away from home. My life is more meaningful and aligned and I feel more like myself. I love myself more. Life has become better. I finally feel like I can become the person I was actually meant to be in this life, instead of being held back by my past.

💗It was bittersweet but all worth it. ✈️🥲

😱🇰🇷 안녕 ! Shocked by how much I enjoyed Seoul - big city vibes but not too crazy, parks and hiking, shopping and beauty, saunas and delicious food !

💕Haven’t been to Korea since I was a kid and it seems like the whole city has glowed up and is super trendy now (thanks to K wave influence, spanning everything from music to dramas to beauty to fashion to food to medical tourism etc). I enjoyed exploring all the neighbourhoods and eating everything my stomach could handle! I especially enjoyed walking along Cheonggyecheon, the stream flowing right through the city.

Tips- 👆You’ll be walking a lot!! It’s a big city and things can be quite spread out
👆Take a taxi or bus from the airport. The train ride is long and transfers are difficult and sometimes too far with your suitcase
👆Download Naver to view transport routes cos Google Maps doesn’t fully work there
👆Buy a T Money card and add $$ at the convenience store to use on trains and buses
👆Most places had some English/Chinese speaking staff so that helped a lot!
👆Almost all the random places I ate at had amazing food ! Always order the Mild option, as it’s still gonna be spicy! Portions are huge so don’t over order!
👆Food was very affordable with most meals around 15,000 won or less (around S$8-10)
👆Show your passport for tax free shopping at major stores
👆Some places are open til late or 24hours like some of the parks, shopping malls or saunas.
👆Medical tourism is top rate here. I went to the dentist— it was very affordable, had good service and everyone was English speaking. I was pretty impressed!

⛩️🇯🇵Spent 2 months and discovered new places that I liked in Kyoto. Compared to Osaka and Tokyo, Kyoto is a much smaller but culturally interesting and peaceful city. It was once the Imperial Capital of Japan, so it’s steeped in culture and tradition. It’s full of temples, shrines, cafes, traditional crafts, museums and hiking, if that’s your vibe.

Here’s a whole list of hidden gems worth visiting-
📍Tsujiri JR Kyoto station - hidden inside JR Isetan Kyoto Station department store, level 6
📍Obanzai Nomura Nishiki - Obanzai cuisine is native to Kyoto, using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, served in small portions
📍Kamo base coworking
📍Daitokuji temple for zen gardens (karesansui) and bonsai
📍Cafe Bibliotic Hello!
📍Mar cafe for rooftop views (thanks Jia for the rec!)
📍Shinpuhkan shopping mall - cute shops and cafes
📍Kawama cafe - riverside views
📍Kurama to Kifune hike
📍Hyoue cafe in Kifune
📍Kamogawa delta stepping stones
📍Izuu - traditional Kyoto-style sushi like vinegar mackerel sushi and pressed sushi (thanks Masaya for the rec!)

💕If you’re looking for some other hidden gems, my tip is to browse travel guide books for Kyoto at the bookstore (only in Japanese though). They have some really good recommendations especially for food and cafes that locals go to!

💕I’m also constantly on Google Maps searching for cool spots. Or just stay a few more days and wander around!
