Around 9 years ago, my Dad would not stop telling us we wouldn’t get another dog. On Christmas of 2017, we said our first hello to the best dog anyone could ever ask for. His name, which there was a lot of arguments about, was Baizley Murray Sheahan. My parents were deciding on which one to get, and when they saw him steal food from his older (and much bigger) sister, they knew he was the one. Baizley was so badly behaved we had to send him to obedience school for around 2 months and those 2 months fell over my birthday. When he got back he was still his happy self. Always smiling. The obedience school barely did anything to him, except now he knew how to go to his place (which he hated), sit, lay down, and come. Over these 8ish years I have learned what true love means. I also learned what a soulmate was. True love wasn’t with a person, and it doesn’t mean buying elaborate gifts or saying the word. It means someone who is so excited to see you everyday you come home. Loving you when you’re crying and licking your tears off your eyes. A soulmate isn’t always a person. It can be a dog. A cat. In my case, it was the very dog I met on Christmas at 6 in the morning. Baizley wasn’t sad on his last day. He was still the puppy we met 8 years ago and bit us when he was playing. He still wanted to play with a ball. He wanted to annoy us. I thought I wouldn’t miss some things, like his barking out of nowhere, his EXCESSIVE playing, fur in my mouth, or pawing at his food bowl. But what I would give to have any of that back is almost everything. My dog loved everyone he met. There was no person he didn’t like. He was the most perfect dog I could ever have, and taught me what love was. He’s my best friend. I used to say other things were my biggest heartbreak, but this is what true heartbreak feels like. I am going to miss him the rest of my life. He’s no longer in pain though, and I already know he is running with my childhood dog, Wendel, and having a blast with my Papa and meeting so many people. Run fast my bugger ❤️
