G r o w🌱

I wrote this song after a weekend away with a couple friends. The week prior I’d been in a bit of an anxiety spiral about the state of the world (which to be fair isn’t exactly difficult these days). Over dinner one night, we started talking about trusting the “small openings” in life…moments or experiences that feel expansive and not based in fear or a scarcity mindset.

Trusting these “small openings” became the starting point for Grow.

Is there a word for this?
This feeling I have
That there is something opening around me
Am I ready for it?
Been waiting for so long
To see the road ahead rise up to greet me

Could it be enough
Cloud faith hold all this doubt?
That I could ever see
These walls collapsing around me

Plant a seed, push it down
into the ground
Leave it alone
Take a deep breath
Let it go
And watch it grow

Fear of scarcity blinds me
Moves in like a flood
Oh I need some reminding
Of all that’s good in front of me
Caught a glimpse of the way
So close I almost see it
Oh God help me believe it
God would you help me
Believe it

Plant a seed, push it down
into the ground
Leave it alone
Take a deep breath
Let it go
And watch it grow

I always really enjoy my chats with Darcy at @eastcoastdna and this one was no exception!

We discussed themes from the EP (home, memory, nostalgia) and how the song Press Rewind came to be.

‘Back Where I Started’ is the final song on this new EP.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how making art is series of creative decisions. Saying yes to an idea means moving in a certain direction - and thereby saying no to other possibilities.

When I was writing ‘Unravelling,’ the last song on my 2024 EP golden hours, I had a couple of very distinct ideas that I recorded as voice memos. One was the beginning of what would become ‘Unravelling,’ and the other had a completely different melody line and feeling.

I’ve always loved the idea of going back to that original chord progression and to explore, ‘what else could this have become?’ So I revisited it and took things in a different direction.

This became ‘Back Where I Started,’ and it felt fitting to end the EP by returning for a moment to its sister song.

Thankyou so much for listening to the EP, and for sharing such kind words. I am very grateful to have such a supportive community! ⋆˙⟡

My first show for this EP release tour is in Guelph at @lapochebar on October 10th. Do you have friends in Guelph who you think might enjoy the show? Please send them my way! (Ticket link is in my bio and tix also available at the door) by @sheal.music

˚˖𓍢ִ໋❀ ‘home-going’ ˚˖𓍢ִ໋❀ is out everywhere today!

I absolutely loved the experience of recording these songs at home, on the same piano where I first wrote them.

home-going by produced by @eric_vanier who also played bass, guitar, drums, synth, and bgs on a few of the tracks.

I am immensely grateful for everyone who supported me in helping to bring this little project to life!
