Pain. Fear. Induction. Intervention. These are often the first things that come to mind when we talk about childbirth.

But how much of what we believe about birth comes from fear-filled stories, and how much comes from actually understanding how birth works?

In this conversation from the streets of London, we see just how many gaps there are in our collective knowledge of childbirth. From the incredible role of oxytocin to the impact of medical interventions, there is so much we simply aren't taught.

Understanding your body, your hormones, your options and the choices available to you can transform how you approach birth, whatever path it takes.

That's exactly why Nadine wrote the She Births book. A practical, evidence-informed and holistic guide for women and their partners to move beyond fear, navigate interventions with confidence and discover what's possible when we prepare for birth differently.

Because birth deserves more than fear. It deserves understanding. ๐Ÿค

So much of birth prep is separated: a class for the body, a program for the mind, someone online for the evidence, someone else for the spiritual side. And somehow youโ€™re supposed to stitch it all together while very pregnant and very tired.

Thatโ€™s what I loved about this monthโ€™s podcast conversation with Nadine Richardson of @shebirths , and about her new book, Sh Births: Your Practical Guide to a Beautiful Birth. Her book, philosphy and education doesnโ€™t make you pick a side. Science and intuition, practical tools and spirit, the birth of the baby and the making of a mother, all in one place.

Nadine has been supporting families for more than twenty years. She built her program from what she saw at births long before the research caught up to it.

In this monthโ€™s episode we talk about her story, why she gives every tool away, why partners need the whole toolkit, matrescence, and why her number one piece of advice for pregnant women is simply to slow down.

Come read/listen if this one has you curious. And stay tuned for some exciting news about the book later this week....because weโ€™re giving more away besides the excellent information in this podcast. by @shebirths

Waters breaking - it's not always like the movies ๐Ÿ’ง

Most of us picture it the same way: a big gush, a rush to the hospital, and the experts take it from there. In reality, only around 8-10% of labours begin with waters breaking before contractions start.

More often, your waters stay intact well into labour, and that's a good thing. The amniotic sac:
๐Ÿ’ง cushions your baby and placenta by spreading the pressure of contractions evenly through the fluid
๐Ÿ’ง helps protect the umbilical cord and its blood flow
๐Ÿ’ง bulges in front of your baby's head to help gently stretch the cervix open

And if your waters do break first? Contractions usually begin within 24-48 hours, but every labour has its own rhythm. Reach out to your care provider and doula so you can make a plan together.

This is also where preparation really pays off. In She Birthsยฎ we share lots of pre-labour strategies, including optimal positioning, which can be a key tool to help your baby into a great position and encourage labour to build.

Birth is full of moments you can't predict. Knowing what's really happening in your body helps you meet each one with calm and confidence.

Want the full evidence? It's all inside the She Birthsยฎ Online Course and Masterclass - and in my book, She Births: Your Practical Guide to a Beautiful Birth. Link in bio ๐Ÿ’›

What did you think would happen when your waters broke? Tell us below ๐Ÿ‘‡

One thing people don't know about the She Births book: it's part memoir.

Yes, it's full of evidence-based information and practical tools for you and your partner, plus journaling prompts, reflection questions at the end of every chapter, and real birth stories. But woven through it all are three generations of birth: my grandmother's, my mum's and my own.

Looking across a hundred years, we can see how birth has changed historically, culturally, and in our sense of agency as women and our voice inside the system. When we give birth, we're part of a continuum. There's the red thread of our matrilineal line, our heritage and our strength. And there's a story of doing better, generation by generation. With the right information, every one of us can create a beautiful birth.

The two books that inspired me? Breath by @mrJamesNestor and How to Change Your Mind by @Michael.Pollan. Both weave history, evidence, culture and personal story together, and that's what I wanted to do for birth.

The book is a gift to every family who joins a She Births Masterclass with me or a certified educator. Come along to prepare not just you - but your partner!

Sometimes labour asks us to face the fears we've carried our whole lives ๐ŸŒ€

The psychological journey of birth can be a wild ride. Sometimes this coincides with transition (8-10cm dilation).

For @innes_lauren, it meant meeting a challenge she once feared and moving through it. But going through this gave her a gift: embodied evidence of her own strength and her ability to trust herself.

This is why birth empowerment lasts. It isn't something we're told; it's something we live. It's both the challenge and the reward of labour.

We spiral back to our fears again and again, meeting them each time in a new way. That's the wonderful mystery of life.

We are delighted to announce Nadine Richardson @nadine_shebirths @shebirths as a keynote speaker at the 2027 Doula Conference, Becoming: Bringing Change Into Focus.

Nadine became a doula because she wanted to understand birth more deeply. More than 20 years later, that curiosity has grown into a body of work spanning birth education, doula care, yoga, podcasting, speaking and writing.

She is the founder of She Birthsยฎ, a childbirth education program that has been scientifically evaluated through a randomised controlled trial, with results published in the British Medical Journal in 2016.

Nadineโ€™s first book, She Births: Your Practical Guide to a Beautiful Birth, is now available across Australia, Europe and the United States.

Based between Sydney and the Northern Rivers, her work centres on restoring the sacredness of birth and supporting families to create a beautiful birth experience, whatever unfolds.

She is also currently working on two creative projects designed to take these conversations further into the mainstream, with a focus on shifting cultural attitudes and changing the way birth is represented in media.

Nadine brings a beautiful combination of evidence, creativity, experience and deep reverence for birth, and we are so looking forward to having her join us.

Your due date is a guesstimate, not a deadline ๐ŸŽˆ

Only around 5% of babies arrive on their due date โ€” and whether it's your first baby or your second, yours will most likely come after it. Anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks is a healthy window for your baby to arrive.

So instead of counting down to one day on the calendar, think of it as your baby's birthday month. They'll choose the day โ€” you just need to show up for the party. (And why not book a romantic dinner for your due date? Chances are it'll go ahead!)

Understanding the research takes the pressure off and helps you feel calm, informed and confident as you wait.

Want the full evidence? It's all inside the She Birthsยฎ Online Course and Masterclass โ€” and in my book, She Births: Your Practical Guide to a Beautiful Birth.

Not every fear in pregnancy is about the birth itself. And not every birth will unfold exactly as we imagined.

Did your birth unfold differently to what you hoped for?

Whether youโ€™re planning a physiological birth or a C-section there are always ways to make the experience more personal to you and to protect your sense of agency.

The preparation and work we do in pregnancy matters. Understanding oxytocin, connection, skin-to-skin, safety, closeness. Protecting the early breastfeeding relationship and those precious first moments and hours - these are tools we can carry into birth to make it beautiful.

I call it filling the gaps. Knowing what matters, understanding why it matters, and finding ways to bring those things into your birth.

And sometimes the first gap we need to fill is simply - knowledge.

Thatโ€™s why I wrote the ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ด book, so you and your partner can understand birth, prepare deeply and make every birth beautiful.

Can you see the raised area at the lower part of this mamaโ€™s back?

The small area of bones shifts backwards in the second stage of labour, signalling the babyโ€™s descent through the birth canal.

This diamond-shaped lump on the lower

How amazing our women's bodies!

What changes to your body did you notice during labour?
