‘Into the Oceans Depths: Whales and the Deep Ocean’ was an unforgettable way to wrap up our two-day event! Held on the 10th of May at the College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka Auditorium, the session brought together passionate ocean enthusiasts, researchers, and conservation advocates for an evening of inspiring conversations on whales and the deep ocean.

We opened Day 2 with Seychellois Deep Sea Scientist Sheena Talma who shared her journey , “From Mountain Tops to the Deep Sea.” Starting with studying mountain frogs in her mountainous nation of the Seychelles to exploring one of the least understood ecosystems on Earth; the deep sea. Through stories from multiple deep-sea expeditions, she highlighted her passion for ocean exploration, her work in developing new technologies such as the “Deep Ocean Research and Imaging System” and her efforts to create more inclusive spaces in deep-sea research and exploration.

The final talk of the event was by Dr Asha de Vos who passionately talked about her work to unravel , “The Secret Lives of Sri Lanka’s Giants.” Sri Lanka’s whales and why their protection is so important. From her early work in sperm whale acoustics to her groundbreaking discoveries on blue whales in Sri Lankan waters, her session beautifully highlighted the global significance of Sri Lanka’s marine life and the importance of protecting it for future generations.

Day 2 continued the energy of an incredible first day with fascinating storytelling and inspiring exchanges between the speakers and the audience. Here are the highlights from another memorable evening.

And with that, we successfully conclude Oceanswell’s “Into the Oceans Depths”. As always, we enjoy creating spaces for curious minds, and ocean lovers to come together. We were also thrilled to be able to giveaway several copies of the beautiful Save Our Seas Foundation magazine to our most passionate audience members! Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this event such a memorable experience - we can’t wait to see you again at the next one!

We extend our thanks to our partners Save Our Seas Foundation and @aitkenspencetravels for supporting this event. by @sheenatalma

🌊A journey across oceans, cultures and time. We’re proud to share another completed mural from @pangeaseed’s Mahé Ocean Murals community art initiative, presented by @saveourseasfoundation in Seychelles.

📍Located in Victoria, Mahé

🎨 “Tides Beyond Time” by Japanese artist @kensuketakahashi1977.art reimagines the traditional folktale of Urashima Taro through the waters of Seychelles, transforming the story into a shared voyage between cultures.

✨ Surrounded by marine life native to Seychelles, islanders join the legendary fisherman as the journey extends beyond familiar reefs into the vast, unseen deep sea toward the mythical Ryugu Castle. Developed in collaboration with Seychellois deep-sea researcher @sheenatalma, the mural draws attention to this largely hidden world: one that sustains ocean health yet remains fragile and under threat.

Flowing like an ocean current, the composition weaves together human connection, folklore, and layered ocean realms, reminding us that the ocean is not a boundary, but a bridge carrying stories, memory, and culture across generations and geography.

Blending Japanese mythology with Seychellois identity, the work reflects both the visible richness of coastal life and the mysterious depths below, calling for greater awareness and protection of deep-sea ecosystems before they are lost.

This mural is part of PangeaSeed’s ongoing global initiative to spark dialogue and action through public art, connecting communities to the urgent need for ocean conservation.

New episode of Planet Visionaries, in partnership with the @Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative! In this one, I get to chat marine biologist Sheena Talma (@sheenatalma) and deep-sea explorer Katy Croff Bell about how only 0.001 percent of the deep ocean has been visually observed and why the deep ocean may be humanity’s greatest remaining frontier.

Listen now at the link in my bio.

What’s it like seeing an iceberg for the first time? 🧊🤩

Throwing it back to last year when we asked scientist @sheenatalma that exact question! An exciting moment for the #SouthSandwichIslands team in the early part of the expedition.

Species discovery isn’t a solo mission — it’s a team sport. 🧠🤝

On the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition, collaboration means coral specialists learning from sea cucumber experts, crustacean specialists sharing insights with sponge experts.

Each scientist brings their own lens, helping build a fuller understanding of the marine life we’re discovering - often for the first time!

🎥 Nekton’s Science Programme Manager Sheena Talma shares how exchanging knowledge with fellow expedition team members - like @oceancensus scientist Dr Raissa Hogan - is not only important for species discovery, but also her own knowledge building.

📌 This 35-day mission was a collaboration between Ocean Census, @schmidtocean and Go South, to discover new marine species and investigate the impact of submarine geohazards. by @sheenatalma

How can you forget your first iceberg? 🧊

Sheena Talma, Science Programme Manager at @nektonmission and marine biologist, shares her awe as the team aboard Falkor (too) encounters some serious ice while continuing their research in one of the planet’s most remote and fascinating regions.

Nearby, South Georgia has made headlines with the colossal iceberg A23a — a frozen giant the size of Cornwall, weighing nearly a trillion tonnes — recently running aground just 70 miles offshore.

🎥 Hear from Sheena about her journey, the thrill of polar science, and the magic of witnessing something few ever get the chance to see.

📌 The #SouthSandwichIslands expedition is a 35-day mission to discover new species, expand our understanding of marine biodiversity, and map the seafloor to study the impact of volcanism and earthquakes on ocean life.

The expedition is a collaboration between @oceancensus, @schmidtocean, and GoSouth (an initiative of @britishantarcticsurvey, @geomarkiel, and @plymuni).

First post about South Sandwich Islands has got to be about ICEBERGS.

It’s my first time seeing icebergs but it’s also the first time for many others onboard - so we got to share this awesome experience of seeing solid water (ice) on liquid water.

Food and art and more sights.

One of my all time fav artists is Salvador Dali.
I was like a child in a candy shop seeing his work.

Food - it was okay

I’m intrigued by the yellow duck stores though 🤩 taken in Prague, Czech Republic by @sheenatalma
