Iā€™m thrilled to announce that this winter, Sheer Spite Press will publish Ghost Town Trips: By Rail, Canoe, Bike, & Thumb, a collection of writing by Reece Steinberg, originally published in his zine Q For Treason. ā€œI felt like this was the essence of how I wanted to live my lifeā€” bike through beautiful areas, stop in small communities, take breaks when I wanted to, and take pleasure in cooling off in the water.ā€ From hopping trains to British Columbia ghost towns, to canoe-camping on the Yukon River, to hitchhiking in rural Syria: Reece Steinbergā€™s travels have taken him to off-grid places few people get to see. Traveling without a cell phone, high-tech gear, or much cash, Reece relies on paper maps and the kindness of strangers. His search for abandoned spaces brings him together with everyone from the Syrian uncle who led him to a rural backyard castle, to a gold prospector who calls everyone a ā€œdogfucker.ā€ Collecting work originally published between 2006 and 2016 as seven issues of the zine Q For Treason, this book is a reminder that adventure is always possible when youā€™re willing to step off the edge of the map. coming this winter from sheer spite: Ghost Town Trips: By Rail, Canoe, Bike, & Thumb, by Reece Steinberg. As you can see in the pictures, it seems like it is going to be plain weave and feature some stripes but we will see where it goes. Hereā€™s a paragraph from the book Iā€™ve been carrying around about how friendship is the foundation for resistance, transformation and true community: ā€œMoving away from lonely convenience toward annoying inconvenient interdependence is difficult and probably a lifelong journey. Weā€™ll all need to figure out how to be around people we donā€™t know and people we donā€™t like, to help them out, and to stand in solidarity with their struggles. Weā€™ll need to build and sustain institutions and organizations beyond the scale and longevity of individual friendships. And it will be hard, hard, hard. But your friends are the people you already like. Youā€™ve already chosen each other and built trust with one another.
