Abstract — When Did Europeans Become Americans?

"When Did Europeans Become Americans?" examines the complicated historical transformation of European settlers and immigrants into what would eventually be called “Americans.” Rather than accepting American identity as a timeless or self-evident category, this book asks when, how, and under what political and social circumstances Europeans came to be regarded as Americans. Through an examination of colonial America, Indigenous governments, European settlement, citizenship, race, nationality, indentured servitude, and the formation of the American republic, the book explores the distinctions between being born on American soil, becoming a citizen, belonging to a nation, and being identified as “American.”
It also examines how early colonial societies interacted with Indigenous peoples whom European records variously described as Indians, Moors, and other identities, raising important questions about who was already exercising political authority in America before the emergence of the United States.

The book further investigates the evolution of racial classifications and the historical construction of “whiteness” in America, including the changing status of European immigrant groups and the political decisions that shaped who could claim American citizenship and belonging. By bringing together historical events, government records, legal developments, genealogy, population movements, and overlooked aspects of colonial and early American history, "When Did Europeans Become Americans?" challenges readers to reconsider conventional narratives of American identity. Ultimately, the book asks a fundamental question: If Europeans arrived in America as Europeans, when did they become Americans—and who had the authority to define what an American was?

I had a surprise visit from my Brother Aamun Jamaal today. For those who appreciate the books that I am blessed to author, it was this man who taught me everything about book publishing and how to become an author. Honor to whom honor is due!

We met in 1994 and are still close even to this day!
