As rape and sexual assault victims grapple with life post-trauma, one of the loaded questions that is sometimes asked is, “What were you wearing?” The unstated but troubling implication is that if the clothes worn were provocative enough, then that may affect the level of sympathy offered. But, as an exhibit in Belgium proves, the question is useless, and harmful, in determining a motive for rape.Called, “What were you wearing?”Maritime in Brussels features replicated clothing items similar to those worn by real victims of sexual assault, and attempts to disprove the myth that provocative clothing incites rape.Replicated from descriptions of clothing worn the night survivors were attacked, the exhibit proves that clothing never justifies or incites rape.

Featuring items such as pyjamas, tracksuits, even a child’s My Little Pony shirt, the exhibit shows clothing as innocent as the victims themselves. The organisation behind the exhibit, the prevention service of Molenbeek, opened the exhibit to "create a tangible response to one of our most pervasive rape culture myths" because "The belief that clothing or what someone what wearing 'causes' rape is extremely damaging for survivors." With the exhibit, the organisation wants to prove that a person’s outfit can never be seen as a mitigating circumstance or provocation by a rapist.According to Lieshbeth Kennes, a training and counselling employee of CAW, who spoke to VRT1 Radio, “What you immediately notice when you walk around here is they are all very normal pieces that everyone would wear.” And, referencing the My Little Pony shirt, Kennes states: “The exhibition is also a harsh reality: most victims of rape still know exactly what they were wearing at the time.” by @sheiseeshah

You might be pushed to the edge because of a thought or an action you performed without others approval. People might label you because of a weakness you are working so hard to overcome. You might be mocked because you are dreaming big. Humans are mean and this world is unfair. Don't expect everyone to applaud your success. Don't assume everyone will be grieving your loss. Each person is watering their grasses while making sure how yours never gets greener. Whatever the world assumes should not be a setback. Your journey is different, the goal is yours, the hustle is yours so let the cheering be yours. Applaud yourself even when others won't coz its only you who knows how much you had to lose in order to get where you are today. The pearl never competes with the other gems, it lives in a shell away from the crowd but is it not one of the most expensive jewels? Just because you think or dream differently doesn't mean you're weak or incapable. You are unique in your own way. Own it and let the sky be the limit... by @sheiseeshah

Have you ever thought that the wrongs you did in the past might be catching up with you the fat kid you bullied back in the school, the poor old man you scoffed by the road, the so many times you shouted back at your parents?? Those things might have seemed petty but who knows how God works. The pain and confusion you feel now might not be baseless. It might have because of the silly curses that kid was throwing at you when you mocked him, the old man felt humiliated and maybe asked God to show you a bit of distress for the way you made him feel. Your parents were hurt coz you disrespected them. It's not always the World or the people who are to blame. Sometimes it's us, we don't want to point fingers at ourselves so we hold others accountable."Sit down and reflect" maybe you're not as messed up as you think you are, maybe it's simply remorse eating you from the insides. "Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would become blind".... I really admire Helen Keller because she was a unique lady who despite her disability i.e. blindness, rose above those who had the blessing of sight. She was, without a doubt, an exceptional individual who helped others to help themselves. What earns my respect for Helen Keller is that she didn’t allow her challenges to keep her from exploring the world around her and achieving what is deemed difficult even for people without challenges....!!!! by @sheiseeshah
