It’s taken me quite some time to process the phone call I received in June. “Shelby, it’s Mom and Grandma. You need to come home. Your granddaddy is declining.” In my mind, this had happened a few times already in my life, but when it happened, I had never been this far from home. Hopped on a plane 4 hours later and arrived late that evening. When he was told I came in the room, he became a bit more lively and looked around for me. We were all there within the next 24 hours. We spent the next week with him in hospice care.
Losing a granddad holds a significant weight, and for me, losing another male hero before the age of 30 feels crushing. Death is inevitable. Everyone has their time, but for me, 92 years for my granddaddy still felt too short. I’ve not really gotten to remind myself of him until now.
What most, if not all, know about my granddaddy and my relationship is that I was indeed his favorite. His only granddaughter who came later in life. The man was wrapped around my pinky finger. From Donald Duck impersonations to granddaddy’s old-fashioned milkshakes, “they’re good, and good for ya” was the commercial we built around his stirred, not blended, and not shaken milkshakes. When a booboo or a sore throat happened while at his house, “Dr. Waters” counter was where I sat to get bandaged up. He was always so gentle with me. He was my advocate always. When stories of my big emotions and crying on car rides would come up, he would “misremember” those moments and remind my parents I was an angel.

He would take all of his grandchildren on fun trips, which we all know was itching his travel bug as well. From Disney World to the Biltmore to the Jacksonville Zoo, where he and Grandma bought me my lifelong stuffy best friend, Brook. He gave in to all of my wants of stuffed animals, which definitely became an issue, but I was never without a stuffy.
He loved deeply. I love telling stories about him, and my dad, so please ask to keep their memory alive. by @shelbstodd

The Lord fights for you, you need only to be still. –Exodus 14:14
This has been a theme within my life this past season. Ministry has been busy, hard, and a gift all at the same time. On top of that, personal life began feeling like it was crumbling from burying my granddad to anxiety taking completely over. I have never had a vacation be more timely than this one and truth be told, I wanted to go to the beach when we booked this. God had a different plan. Life in the mountains forces you to take a huge pause, you have no choice but to marvel at the birds, the scenery, and Creation as a whole. As I’ve processed through hard emotions and been reminded over and over that God and His people fight for me, I come back rejuvenated for a new season of ministry with our students with a breath of fresh air in my lungs. Thank you Jesus for this summer, for this end of summer vacation, and for the people who have been holding me accountable to rest for the last year. by @shelbstodd

The past 2 weeks, God has showcased His character through our students. From worshipping and praying together at summer camp to serving alongside 12 of our students at Joni and Friends, I can honestly say it’s a joy to see the fruit the Holy Spirit is growing in these kids. Watching our students love others so freely kept me at a loss for words. Praise God for these students and all He will continue to do in them. Praise God that I get to do ministry alongside my favorite people and spur one another on toward the gospel of Jesus Christ. by @shelbstodd

Celebrating 50 years of Nu Kappa and 10 years since our charter class was reinstated this weekend felt incredibly special. ✨

Getting to step back into so many of our college memories, laugh about the moments that shaped us, and spend time with sisters who have meant so much through every season was something I’ll always be grateful for.

Together we raised over $15,000 for Make-A-Wish at the gala. 💫 Watching generations of sisters come together to support such an incredible mission was the perfect way to celebrate where we’ve been and where we’re going.

Grateful for the memories, the sisterhood, and the chance to relive a little bit of the Nu Kappa magic. 💛❤️ by @shelbstodd

February was so fun! From graduating from Re:Generation🎓 to lots of team building👏🏻 to birthday celebrations🥳 to duck hunting 🦆 on staff (and losing ducks in the printer) and catching up with my favorite college🏠👯‍♀️ roommate in my city! Not so fun was the flu 🤒😷 but we have bounced back! Excited for the sunshine and warmth to continue! taken in The Colony, Texas by @shelbstodd

And just like that, a year of Tuesdays with these women has come and gone. When I walked into Re:Generation, I really questioned “why am I even here? I know I need help, but why?” It didn’t take long for me to see that though I knew and believed God was my Lord, I didn’t trust him with my hurt. I had idols. God gently (okay maybe He had to grab ahold some things firmly) changed my heart and my priorities to be on Him every step of the way.
What a gift it has been to watch God not only transform my heart and life, but each and every one of these ladies. When I began the group, I thought “surely this will just be a weekly thing,” but no. These are sisters, accountability partners, people I can rely on to remind me of the gospel at 10:00 PM in a parking lot on the phone. I wanted to quit so many times but these ladies didn’t let me, and I am GRATEFUL. It was hard, but the Lord continued to hold me as I pressed on further. Thank you to my outside community, mentors, church community, and so many more for holding me accountable to continue pressing in.
If you are struggling with any hurts, habits or hang up’s, I would love to get coffee with you and share how Jesus can transform your life when you fully surrender every single day. taken in Dallas, Texas by @shelbstodd

The Lord provided a way for 2026 to begin in His word and praising Him for all He had done and is doing in my life and in the next generation of believers.

Starting with serving at Passion to CPC in Orlando. Watching students from 18-25 worship so freely and release their chains to Jesus brought me to tears. I have so much hope for Gen Z and their faith. They are world changers.

This year, I will be focusing on all areas of life with the word: discipline. I am excited for what God reveals and teaches me this year. by @shelbstodd

This year I learned that calling flows best from wholeness.
I healed. I rested. I stayed rooted.
God placed me exactly where I’m meant to serve, while gently restoring what had been broken.
Community carried me.
Jesus re-centered me.
2025 was about becoming, not performing. by @shelbstodd
