POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
📍recently at the yundong library in haikou, hainan, watching a girl enjoy her book and the sun, oblivious to anyone around. our first post, hi! we are zizi (worm) and dada (shark), two quiet girls who love reading and have fairly strong opinions sometimes. as introverts, this account is a challenge to ourselves to be brave and put ourselves out there so our thoughts don't just stay as thoughts. we're still keen on living in our own heads but we're also curious to know what's going on in yours! things are less scary when you don't have to do them on your own so we hope you'll join us on this journey of discovery~!! 🐛🦈☘️💖🧚🏼‍♀️ by @shelfmadeduo

📚 11/22/63 by Stephen King At 849 pages, it’s a commitment. This is not your usual Stephen King horror novel. The premise is irresistible: a schoolteacher finds a portal to 1958 in the back of a diner and sets out to stop the Kennedy assassination, which means living in the past for five years while he waits. There were stretches where I wanted Stephen King to get on with the main plot, but in hindsight the detail is the point; it’s what makes the Land of Ago feel lived in, and makes you feel you’ve made the journey alongside the protagonist. For readers who like to move into a book rather than visit it. Worth every page. #bookstagram #bookreview #stephenking #112263 by @shelfmadeduo

📚 excellent women by barbara pym i found this very funny and charming in all the ways that i think would make for a great series by the bbc. the way mildred overextends herself and puts herself in the most ridiculous situations was comical, all while the novel remains socially observant in not presenting marriage as the obvious solution to solitude. it also asks the question of what makes a full life—if one spent alone and made up of mundane things can be considered sufficiently meaningful and fulfilling, though we see quite pleasingly at the end that, in mildred’s eyes, it indeed can be. #barbarapym #bookreview #bookrecommendation by @shelfmadeduo

📚 the good women of china: hidden voices by xinran ⚠️ this book is not for the faint of heart, please check trigger warnings. it seems like such a silly thing to say but this book reminded me more than any other book recently that to read more is to know more. every story in this book is harrowing and xinran tells each one with care, stripped down to the barest facts. she’s honest with herself and her readers about how these stories make her feel, and it is her courage to bear the weight of these stories and to share them responsibly that we now have the chance to know the lives of those who have suffered immeasurably which would have otherwise remained unknown to us. #bookreview #asianliterature #chineseliterature #translatedliterature #womenintranslation by @shelfmadeduo

📚 Woman in the Pillory by Brigitte Reimann Kathrin is a German farm woman whose husband is away fighting for the Third Reich, and Alexei is the Soviet prisoner of war sent to help with the harvest. Despite the gulf of ideology between them, they form an emotional connection and become each other’s reason to get through the war. What grows between them is forbidden by a state that punishes it in public. Reimann doesn’t sugarcoat it and doesn’t tie it off with a fairytale ending, which is what makes it ache. It is also a snapshot of its times—Reimann wrote this when she was 22, in the newly formed socialist East Germany. You can feel her working out what she believed on the page, through Alexei. For readers who want a fast-paced, gut-punching read that takes you from the first flutter to the forced separation, and ends on a disquieting thought that bigotry has fractured humans since time immemorial, and we appear determined to keep at it. #bookreview #bookrecommendations #classicliterature #reading by @shelfmadeduo

📚 the barefoot woman by scholastique mukasonga this is an ode to rwanda, to the women who kept their families and communities together, and most of all, a love letter to her mother. mukasonga was generous in sharing the stories that made up her childhood as she spoke plainly of the injustices suffered, and warmly of the love that sustained them through every horror. loving your children and your neighbours, protecting them and keeping a home are brave, brave things to do when a genocide seeks to destroy every texture of your life and to make the whole of you disappear. to love like this is a demonstration against violence, an act of defiance to preserve precisely what genocidaires set out to erase, and the reason stories as precious as these survive. #scholastiquemukasonga #womenintranslation #bookreview #bookrecommendation by @shelfmadeduo
