Had an incredible night volunteering with @alberta_parks RANA (amphibian monitoring program) and it was absolutely amazing!! We had a great turnout in the traps and it was really cool learning how to do this sort of research- in many ways it's similar to bird banding, but easier! Here's a blob of a Wood Frog someone caught, a very jumpy fellow!

So I love this find from my backyard. This is a Raspberry Crown Borer, a wasp-mimicking, clear-winged MOTH! They get the name from their larval life cycle, which involves burrowing into the rootstock of raspberry plants. They are natives of North-South Canada and their life cycle often takes 2 YEARS, most of it spent as a little worm safely tucked in, nourished and insulated in the cane of its host plant.

I found this beauty sleeping on our raspberries and realized quickly it was too fat to be a true wasp. Mimicking a stinging insect helps them be less likely to get eaten as they fly.

This goober pooped on me when I picked it up then did a monkeybar-style escape on the rope when I placed it back. Truly only a moth would get up to such goofy shenanigans.

This isn't the typical pet grief post, but as I find it cathartic to write my thoughts out I figured she deserved it, to be known and shared to those I care for.

I bought you in October 30th of 2015. The color of your scales had given your morph a name that intrigued me- "coral ghost" Corn Snake, you were called. I named you Canelé, after a French dessert, because the beautiful pink and yellow hues of your scales reminded me of pastries. You were so small then, all of you coiled easily in the palm of my hand.

I was a terrible reptile keeper back then- I didn't know what I was doing for most of my pets and it took me too many years to learn what adequate pet care was. I still feel guilty about letting you and my Leopard Gecko live through those several years of subpar husbandry. And yet, tough and stalwart as most reptiles are, you perservered until I learned you deserved better. I didn't deserve the privilege of knowing you, but I did, so I made it my responsibility to keep you alive and as "happy" as a snake can feel in a large tank with naturalistic decor.

I write this now with so many regrets. Your kind lives around 15-20 years in captivity. You were only around 11 years old, a decent span for a wild snake, but too short for what care a human can provide.

Reptiles are so good at hiding their hurts, their sicknesses, at surviving hideous conditions and husbandry. I have come to realize over the years I am not a good pet keeper. There will be no others after you. But I vowed to let you live well until you died, and I sincerely hope this was the case. Maybe you needed vet care, and it was invisible to me during my brief periods at home.

I wish I was a better keeper, that I had handled you more. I wish we had more time for you to enjoy the recently added plants and soil I gave your home.

I am sorry I was not there during your last moments.

I am sorry I did not notice or realize something was wrong the week before you died.

I am sorry because I probably missed or did something wrong that led to our 11 years alongside each other cut short.

I am sorry you died, Canelé. I will make sure your mortal remains process with dignity and care. Rest easy by @shelilla

I totally stole the first 2 photos from Shelby but her camera is way better okay!!! I have never seen so many butterflies in one place, once-in-a-lifetime experience fr. Also lots of dead ones. Is it just where we were or has Mexico gotten a lot more expensive compared to the past for anyone else?

More pics coming soon! taken in Mariposa Monarca Santuario Sierra Chincua - Oficial by @shelilla
