Quelques petites nouveautés 📚😘
#bookhaul #librairieindependante #librairiebordeaux #lamachinealire #librairie

Bonus. Money doesn’t buy happiness but it buys good books & good cakes taken in Bordeaux, France by @shereadsox

When you love a book so much that you get your hands on the English translation! I’ve read & recommended before Du pain sur la table de l’oncle Milad by Libyan author Mohammed Al Naas @moh.naas. It’s a book to read and then to reread so I’m on the English translation which will be out in October 2026, translated by Sawad Hussein & pub by @harperviabooks! Stay tuned for a review!

Ps: if I’m rereading it, it’s safe to say it’s really good!

Bookhaul from @fitzcarraldoeditions because they are now shipping to the EU 😍 & they have 20% 😍😍off (until tomorrow!).

So I got some books I’ve had on my list for ages and some other fairly recent books.

Representations of the Intellectuals by Edward Said - essays based on the 1993 Reith lectures by Said himself in which he explores the definition of Intellectuals and how they’ve been perceived & therefore defined.

You have not yet been defeated by Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a British-Egyptian activist who’s been recently released from prison in Egypt.

Your presence is a danger to your life - voices from Gaza: a selection of 26 testimonies of Gazans collected by the Syrian journalist Samar Yazbek. This is will be a very difficult read.

Living Things by Munir Hachemi, a Spanish-Algerian author. As an Algerian I’m always eager to read Algerian authors. Living Things is described as a “dystopian eco-thriller” and it’s set in France with themes of immigration so it definitely piqued my interest!

Any other books by Fitzcarraldo Editions you’d recommend for my next purchase 🙈👀?

The Lady Imam: How amina wadud’s life and faith changed the world - a biography by Carla Power published by @oneworldbooks (thank you for the review copy!).

There is one sentence in the book that in some ways summarizes amina wadud and how we may perceive her: “Mary could seem an incongruity to those who didn’t understand her situation” and while this was written about Mary (amina’s former name), I think it still is very relevant to how she is perceived today as amina wadud.

I went into this book not really knowing who amina wadud was. I’d heard her name around, seen her book “Qur’an and Woman” on bookstagram, had heard of the many controversies surrounding her, but never took the time to actually read about her or her books. I’m glad I haven’t read any of her books just yet because The Lady Imam turned out to be a very good introduction to the figure of amina wadud.
So right off the bat, I’d recommend The Lady Imam, a biography of wadud, to those who might be interested in reading her works Qur’an and Woman, & Inside the Gender Jihad.
The biography gives an in depth look at wadud’s life from childhood to nowadays, from being the child of a methodist minister to embracing islam, from having a stable home to becoming a nomad, a woman in exile, forced at first but later embracing this lifestyle, then navigating Islam and the lived realities of muslim women to leading a mixed prayer in Manhattan.
Reading about amina wadud is challenging in many ways, but I’ve actually had very interesting conversations around this book and some of wadud’s statements. As a Muslim myself, one that’s also French and based in a deeply islamophobic country with an obsession of slandering and vilifying the Prophet Muhamad (pbuh) (I am not Charlie btw), I cannot & do not agree with the provocative phrasings of amina wadud. It defies the point of muslims (men & women) engaging with her ideas, they’re too outraged to pay attention.

(Continued in the comments!! I haven’t written a long review in ages, it feels good to be back☺️)

Let me tell you something! Let me tell you something!
I’ve got a new author for your endless TBR! You’re welcome 😉

The Steinway Seven by Algerian author @badees98 is such a refreshing story with great character development.
It’s about a lost arrogant young Muslim Algerian cop, Saif, and a wrongfully imprisoned Muslim Guinean man turned runaway, Yasin.

Saif is so lost in his life that decides to become a cop in NYC, to pay the bills at least and well, in Algeria his father was a cop so it can’t be that bad. Protect and serve and all that stuff. His first mission is to find the recently escaped seven prisoners among whom Yasin. Saif is not into ACAB.
Yassin was wrongfully convicted and in escaping he sees his ONLY chance of freedom and takes it. But with all NYPD, and FBI looking for the seven fugitives, it’s difficult to hide anywhere in NYC.
Now thankfully it’s Ramadan, and Yasin finds himself seeking refuge in no other places than mosques which provide him with food to break his fast with the muslim community and a place for rest even for a short while.
With Saif being also muslim (although going through a spiritual crisis), Yasin the fugitive and Saif the cop are bound to meet one way or another...

The story of both characters is gripping. Yasin spends his time hiding in plain sight while trying not given jnto paranoia until the burden of freedom because too heavy to carry and Allah sends him relief. Saif keeps throwing himself wholeheartedly in this job only to realize - with Allah’s guidance - this job leaves no space for the heart, let alone ethics and justice.

As a muslim, i loved to see Quranic references all throughout the story, Quran and Islamic ethics are the backbone of this story. As an Algerian, i was here for the Algerian rep - cultural and historical. But mostly I loved reading about the muslim community in NYC, its diversity and the solidarity that can be found in it especially during ramadan.

Definitely recommend this book to EVERYONE but if you’re looking for a good muslim rep, The Steinway Seven is what you need! For my Algerians, I shouldn’t even have to convince you, just trust me.

Lately 📚🌅🏖️🐈
What have you been reading lately?

A little literary update and everything else. I havent posted in ages so I’m trying to get back to it especially that I’ve finally been able to do some very good reading!

In terms of language, I’ve read 3 books in French which is a miracle because I don’t like reading in French (for tons of reasons but that’s a story for another day). Hopefully, I’ve got @fifi.bathef who always suggests exquisite buddy-reads, she reads in English, I read in French: the duo the world needed😎
📕Buddy-read wise, I’ve read Bound to Violence (Le devoir de violence) by Yambo Ouologuem a Malian author. This book, the author, his story are nothing short of … fascinating and mind blowing. This man was way ahead of his time & the literary game.

📗Still in the buddy-read section is Bread on Uncle Milad’s Table (Du pain sur la table de l’oncle Milad) by Libyan author Mohammed Alnaas. So far to very good!

📘Then comes Karim Kattan’s Eden at Dawn, please just trust me on this one, it’s available in translation so go get it. You’ll be adding a great Falesteeni author to your list!

📙Last but not least is the greatest discovery of the month, The Steinway St Seven by Badees Nouiouat, an Algerian American author. I didn’t know what to expect but I was positively surprised by how the story was built and how the main characters evolved.

Full reviews will soon be published❤️
Oh and by the way, I took the longest breaks ever while reading these books so take it easy if you don’t have the same old reading mojo. Enjoy the sunsets, the beaches, the cats, the food, the movies, the company of your own self & your friends 😘
