#TuesdayTips — how to measure flour correctly

Measuring by weight is always more accurate — but if you’re using cups, technique matters more than most people realize.

Lightly scoop the flour so it mounds above the rim of the cup. No tapping, no tamping, no pressing down. Then run a straight edge across the top to level it off cleanly. And use a flat-topped dry measuring cup, not a spouted liquid measure — you can’t level a spout. Packing flour into a measuring cup can give you up to 20% more than the recipe calls for — enough to make a cake dense or cookies dry.

Weigh if you can. Scoop right if you don’t.

Pumpkin Apple Bread - because you shouldn’t have to choose between the two best flavors of fall.

This is my pick for this month’s recipe series with Elizabeth of @pineconesandacorns. It’s a moist, spiced one-bowl loaf studded with fresh apple, piled with streusel, and finished with a vanilla glaze. I used @selefina.spices Harvest Spice (a blend from my friend Kimberly of @eggs_flour_milk) in the batter and @whipzi_co vanilla sugar in the glaze - both do a lot of quiet work here. It comes together fast and is honestly even better the next day.

The right summer dress never really stops working, and this is the one that proves it.

It’s from @yourstylistsays, a curated collection by @abbyarad - a stylist whose taste has shaped a lot of how I dress, so anything from her small line is an easy yes for me. This perfect dress is lined, with a slight slub and a deep rich brown, which is exactly why it carries past summer instead of getting packed away. Adjustable straps, real pockets, the kind of dress you reach for on repeat. Today with my 20-year-old jean jacket and sandals. In a few weeks, a sweater thrown over it and sneakers.

Buying better beats buying more, and a dress like this is the whole argument.

#TuesdayTips Stop throwing away the ginger you didn’t use.

Peel the leftover ginger, cut into chunks, and place in a jar with sherry cooking wine — making sure the ginger is fully submerged. Store in the fridge for up to a year. Take out what you need as you go, and don’t toss the sherry — it picks up the ginger flavor and is great for cooking.

One jar. No waste.

#ComfortableGirlSummer - the tank that won’t quit

Week three of transitional dressing, and this one’s really about the tank, not the blazer.

I lived in this top all summer - and it’s still going strong into fall, because of two things most sleeveless tops get wrong. The knit is a heavier weight, so it reads year-round instead of screaming July. And the cut comes to the end of the shoulder rather than a thin strap, which means it layers like an actual top. The shoes do the same trick down low - black mesh mary janes, closed-toe for fall but still breathing. And a blazer over it all, the first real layer of the season.

The summer pieces worth buying are the ones still working when the weather turns. This is one of them.

#TuesdayTips No more wrestling with garlic skin.

Lay a clove on its side and press down hard with the flat side of a chef’s knife. The clove flattens, the skin separates and pops right off. Bonus: the flattened clove is much easier to chop.

One move. Done.

The easiest way to dress for a season that can’t make up its mind: let your fabrics do the transitioning.

Heavyweight denim shirt over lightweight white linen pants - the contrast between them is the whole point. Something substantial where the air’s turning cool, something airy where it’s still warm. Even the shoes are in between: clear jellies, closed but see-through, not quite summer and not quite not.

White linen well after Labor Day, naturally. You know how I feel about that one!

#TuesdayTips — measure first or prep first?

This is one of the most common baking mistakes and almost nobody knows they’re making it.

“1½ cups pecans, chopped” — the comma means measure first, then chop. You’re measuring whole pecans and chopping after. “1½ cups chopped apples” — no comma, adjective before the noun, means prep first and then measure. You’re peeling, chopping, and then filling the cup.

The difference in quantity is significant enough to affect your recipe. Slow down and read carefully — the punctuation is telling you exactly what to do!

Happy Labor Day - the day the old rule says pack up the white jeans. I never have, and I’m not starting now.

The theme for September is styling summer pieces cooler instead of retiring them. Here the white jeans go into fall with a brown sweater, a white tee peeking at the neckline, and suede clogs. The sweater’s a lighter cotton blend and the clogs are open-backed - both half-in, half-out of the season, which is exactly the point right now.

White after Labor Day was never really a rule. It’s just a good pair of jeans, worn with confidence!

#ComfortableGirlSummer - the biggest one

All month I’ve been breaking the style rules I’m supposedly too old for. Neutrals. Repeating outfits. Oversized shapes. Long gray hair. Here’s the biggest one yet.

Denim on denim, big on big - two rules broken at once. I keep it from tipping into sloppy with a few tricks: different washes top and bottom, proportions in check, sleeves rolled, the back tucked to define my waist.

But the real secret isn’t any of that. It’s confidence. When I feel great in an outfit, that comes through louder than the pieces or the styling ever will. That’s the tip I’d give above all others - and it’s been underneath every week this month.

And not one of these rules cost anything to break. No new purchase. Just wearing what I’ve got like I mean it.
