please watch the whole video it would make my day 🙏

unintentionally this became an impromptu get to know me video. i wanted to talk about how frustrated i was with needing to limit myself to one niche, and then kind of just went off on a tangent about personal branding and how it limited my confidence to express my full self online.

by day, im a university student. by night, im an entrepreneur. throughout the whole day, im a content creator. but what about during the times you don’t see online? who am i then, and why can’t i show her to you?

at this point, you’re probably thinking: shermaine, you’re getting it all wrong. personal branding still allows you to post all your personalities. in fact, it welcomes it!

perhaps, but if i were to post a video of myself cooking tomorrow after i post this video, i doubt you’d be interested and you’d just unfollow. as i’ve experienced many times before from switching up my content.

being perfectionistic even as i edit this video lol

funny enough, this video exists because my 17-year-old self produced the script for it when she was writing her personal statement for college applications. now, i have the honor of reviving this masterpiece and give it the visual identity it deserves.

i know perfectionism like the back of my hand. she has been with me since i was 12. she is omnipresent: she guilt-trips me when im caught having fun with friends instead of studying, resting instead of working on my startup, living in the moment instead of filming. in some ways, she motivates me, but she is also the reason why i burn out.

i doubt she will ever leave, but maybe instead of trying to push her out the door, i should learn to find joy in her company.

and for all my perfectionists out there, if you can take away one thing from this video, let it be this: you are enough. a thousand times enough. 🤍

it is a privilege to have ambition, but it can also be a curse.

i think about how im gonna make $10k every day like it’s my full time job. tbh i think about it more than my university assignments. sometimes it triggers a fear of failure so deep in me it’s concerning🧍‍♀️

being ambitious also means constantly overfilling your plate. im always juggling between student life, entrepreneurship/startup, and content creation. it’s tiring but i dont wanna stop 🥲 by @shermainechangg

i’d never been more burned out creatively than the past summer. yes, i was interning at a top corporate firm that many would kill for, and yes, i am grateful that i got that opportunity…

but i also found myself unable to find as much joy in creating content and working on my startup as i used to. i was so creatively blocked that whenever i sat down, i would just stare blankly at the wall for 10 minutes and give up. i would question my life and ask myself every night “what the hell am i even doing”. honestly, it felt like everything was going right, but also nothing was.

but it wasn’t just the brain strain from work. it was also my environment. as a study abroad student, it was hard to adjust to my life at home again. i was always relying on my parents and needed to coordinate with them to make plans happen. but when im abroad, i lived independently. at home, i was too comfortable, too cared for. it is a privilege, but also a cage.

then i moved to new york city. and i found myself creating again, looking forward to being productive again. i was motivated, and it was a feeling i didnt know i missed all summer.

so when you feel like you’ve lost your spark, leave.

you dont have to go to new york city (obviously. though i highly suggest it 😛), but at least go somewhere out of your comfort zone. by @shermainechangg
