People and perfume. Each endlessly fascinating in their own right. Put them both together and you get dynamite. Fragrance was always my favorite beauty category at L’Oréal because it’s one entirely founded on emotion. It won’t make you look younger or make your hair stronger. But its effects are entirely in the realm of the unseen. And aren’t so many of the things that make our lives magical, unseen? You can’t see the wind, but you can see its effect on your hair, your face, the seashore. You can’t see love, but you can see its transformative power in your life. Scent is like that. You can’t see it, but suddenly you’re somewhere else. Your childhood bedroom. A person you loved. A city you haven’t thought about in years. A version of yourself you’d almost forgotten. That fascination is what became Power of Scent® — an experience I created to explore this most unsung of our senses, together. We smell. We remember. We tell stories. We learn a little about fragrance and a surprising amount about each other. And we laugh! A few beautiful moments from the recent Power of Scent® gathering @sohoworks_ in DUMBO. SCAD’s reputation precedes it, but I certainly didn’t expect to be struck by all its beauty, and most of all, its whimsy. That’s the word that kept coming to mind at every turn, whether at the stunningly curated Magnolia Hall where I was hosted, or SCADamp, or the magical, Hogwarts-like SCADStory building. What a treat to get invited to tour the campus, and lecture for the Luxury Brand Management program in one of my favored subjects, fragrance. Every time I interact with students I’m reminded of how much I love this profession. They were smart, thoughtful, engaged, and if any of you in luxury, beauty, etc are looking for some summer interns, let me know — I met a few great candidates! The absolute cherry on the cake was getting to meet the industry icon Domenico De Sole, former chairman of Gucci Group and who sold Tom Ford to Estée Lauder (for a cool $2.8B). SCAD’s De Sole School of Business— where I got to lecture — is named after him. What an honor, and what a cool place. There are so many special things about @neighbor.nyc 1. So many loved ones’ fingerprints all over this place: @dplant72 my pastor and friend, who had the vision for a church that had a storefront. This is the storefront of @storefrontchurchnyc. @londonkyopo who co-stewarded that vision and helped bring it to life by securing the space and cultivating partners. Susan Lee, David’s wife, who designed it. @modonohuelly and Colleen Castle who cultivated partners and activations in the neighborhood. @tcfury who came up with the name and logo. @mermaidkicks who brought copywriting finesse. The wonderful artists I worked with whose beautiful work graced the walls @bymariandrew @beingshu2 @davidchangstudio @emune and who donated to this auction. The incredibly talented @studioxixi who designed the gorgeous invites and who created pastel drawings of participants. Organisations like @heretohonor led by my friend @cosmosnchaos who held events in the space, friends like @linda.harris.dolan who read her poetry in the space, @gleaningproject whose meaningful art inaugurated the space. 2. A place by the neighborhood and for the neighborhood, beloved by residents for creating a third space for them to belong. 3. A place that gives so much more than it asks. I’m so grateful to have come alongside it, to serve in it, and to draw others into this work. Honored to serve its mission on the board. We held our first Neighbor fundraiser on Thursday, captained by the wonderful Katie Ellis @deargloria.home and the energy in the room was palpable (as evidenced by the bids in the room!) They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This picture holds more than that. A vision realized and accomplished. Both parents. In the U.S. In their home. After fifty years of life and work in Abu Dhabi. Our first family Christmas here. A photo takes a moment. What it signifies takes years—of twists and turns. I’m still carrying the salt water and sea breeze with me. The warmth and love of Egyptian brown arms and eyes. The incomparable taste of fresh fruit juice. The feeling of the golden sun on my skin. The sounds of the summer. The sound of laughter and “fresca frescooka”. The White & Blue nights. All the special loved ones I was so grateful to spend quality time with. Mimi, if you hadn’t passed, we wouldn’t have gone to Sahel this summer. In your parting, you gave us this gift. I miss you more than I can say. I longed to hold you and hug you before you left us.
