At @thehiveentheogenic , I experienced the kind of healing words can barely hold. Guided with wisdom, intuition, and presence by Maria Camila and Joseph Martinez, I surrendered to the medicine.

Ego death and self-discovery feel like understatements…plant medicine unraveled the knots of my life, thread by thread, pulling them straight so I could finally see the larger tapestry. From there, I began weaving new fibers - stronger, softer, truer.

It taught me to let go of rigidity and instead build with structure. To quiet the mind so the heart could roar open. To understand the constellations of family patterns, and to finally see where cycles end and freedom begins.

I leave this retreat forever grateful…for the medicine, for the lessons, and for the gifts I now carry within me.

POV: A wolf follows you home because managing a trophic cascade is hard and she’s maxxed out on PTO.

Keystone predators like wolves or sea otters prevent herbivores from overgrazing, allowing producers to thrive. Removing them causes a top-down cascade, leading to biodiversity loss and habitat collapse.

Wolves are highly intelligent. They’ll study your routines, test your boundaries, steal your stuff, and remember every interaction.

Then, every once in awhile, they’ll curl up against you gently(I use that word loosely) so you can feel how special it is to earn the trust of an animal that was never meant to trust easily.

Dear Apex Community,

We are deeply pained to share the unexpected passing of our beloved Drax.

This morning, during our routine “good morning” safety check-in with the pack, Drax didn’t greet us the way he always does. Something was wrong.

When he slowly emerged from his shaded den, it was immediately clear that we were dealing with an emergency. He was bloated.

We suspected Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), a catastrophic medical emergency where the stomach rapidly fills with gas and twists, cutting off blood flow and compromising vital organs. We immediately took action before waiting to confirm our suspicions. Within minutes, Drax was loaded into our emergency transport vehicle and rushed to the hospital. Living in the rural high desert, emergency resources are not always immediately available to us. Our property sits roughly 45 minutes from an emergency specialty hospital in any direction. The odds were stacked against us, but we never stopped fighting.

Even with safeguards in place, even with immediate action, even with people fighting for him every second: time was not on our side.

With our directors racing Drax to the nearest emergency hospital and every effort being made to stabilize him along the way, it is with absolute devastation that we share that Drax did not make it.

Our hearts are shattered.

Thank you VEG Santa Clarita for being ready the moment he arrived and moving swiftly to try to save him. Not one second was wasted.

There’s so much more we could say about Drax and how special he was. Our fairytale Wolf. Those who knew him couldn’t help but fall in love with him.

Drax was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. And today, while heaven gains another angel, our sanctuary is grieving a profound loss.

Well… overlooked by adopters. Every lead fell through. Every “maybe” ghosted. So I’ll take a hint from the universe.

She was literally raised by wolves, how can she possibly just go to a regular home now? She’s wild in spirit, slightly feral, and sharp as a knife. Every day she reminds me of the soulmates I lost. She showed up not long after Bulleit left, like she already knew her place in my story…but I’ve been resisting.

Tater doesn’t really seem to fit her anymore, so she will continue as Valkyrie. A nod to the fierce guardians who carry warriors home. She’s not a replacement. She’s a continuation. A reminder that love doesn’t always arrive how you expect, but when it lands, you honor it.

“My soul found yours in the wreckage, and it called you home.”

My house has always been a wayward home for the unwanted. So, Valkyrie stays. Welcome to the family kid.
