Venezuelan babe Marjorie De Sousa, 2008 🇻🇪🍒🫧💕For decades, Venezuela stood alongside Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia as one of Latin America’s great telenovela powerhouses. By the 1990s, however, political and economic instability reshaped the industry. Several of the country’s largest television companies gradually relocated much of their production to Miami, a city with a rapidly growing Venezuelan community and, crucially, a neutral base outside the region’s traditional television markets. The move allowed Venezuelan entertainment to continue reaching audiences across the continent while avoiding direct competition within another Latin American country’s media industry.By the early 2000s, this “Miami-fication” had become unmistakable on screen. Venezuelan telenovelas developed a visual language that felt noticeably more Americanized than those produced elsewhere in Latin America. Their protagonists embodied a distinctly Miami aesthetic: bleached blonde hair, deep tans, sculpted bodies, cosmetic enhancements, and glossy Y2K styling influenced by both the United States and the Caribbean. It was a version of Latin glamour that felt simultaneously local and global, anticipating many of the beauty standards that would later dominate the region.Among the defining faces of this era was Marjorie de Sousa. After being crowned Miss Venezuela 1999, she became one of the leading actresses of Venezuelan TV before relocating to Mexico in 2003, where she continues her career today. Her trajectory, from beauty queen to telenovela icon and later musical theater showgirl in productions such as Perfume de Gardenia, perfectly encapsulates the transnational glamour that came to define Venezuelan pop culture in the early 2000s. by @shesvague
