This was my last performance in Germany…the weather was nice enough and I was able to pull a crowd. However I also pulled a muscle and almost got a fine 🙈 The police (Ordnungsamt) approached me literally after my last set of eight. They wanted to fine me without a warning for using a speaker 🥺 this usually never happens in Germany! I convinced them to take my passport and check that I haven’t been given a warning before and drop the charges for now. They agreed, but of course it’s still possible that I will receive an uncomfortable letter. Banning speakers but allowing loud acoustic drum groups makes no sense at all. It’s also discriminative against performers. Musicians can play acoustic, but I can’t play an instrument and perform at the same time - duh. It would be so much better to restrict the volume instead 🤷🏼‍♀️ But I stop complaining now, I’m in Spain, healing my poor body 😅 To leave you with something positive, I want to say thank you to my sister for the beautiful video footage ☺️🙏 Music: “Crazy” Teemid (feat. “How much do you earn?” “It’s hard to tell, every day is different…” There are days I go home with next to nothing and some days I find a 50€ banknote in my hat 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sometimes I can enjoy a good life and sometimes it’s a big struggle… “Are you a student?” “No, I’m a freelance artist” I get this question so often that I started questioning myself why the hack I’m not studying 🙈😆 “Can you perform at my birthday party next year?” “Thanks for your interest. Here’s my card, send me an email and we’ll see what I can do” Most of the time people expect me to perform for 50€ when they see me in the streets. That’s why I don’t get my hopes up until I get an email with a serious request. Furthermore I only do longterm agreements in this price category. Short term it’s a different story. Since I’m traveling a lot I might be far away next year. “Are you Russian?” “No, but my ancestors are from Poland” I take it as a compliment that people assume I’m Russian since Russian women are considered very beautiful and Russian circus artists are elite! “How old are you” “34” People are usually shocked - from far away and dressed like that they assume that I’m in my twenties 😀👍🏻 “What’s your real job?” “I’m a freelance artist - besides street performing I’m also doing events and workshops sometimes” So many people can’t wrap their head around this one…especially in Germany, where a steady income and financial security has a very high priority. My priority has always been to enjoy what I’m doing. Of course it sucks to struggle financially, but it also challenges you and allows you to get creative and grow. Do I need to stabilize my financial situation? Absolutely! But do I regret going down the path I did? Sometimes, but on most days: hell no! At first, multihooping can feel a little intimidating. On-body and box splits don’t happen overnight! Unfortunately I can’t give you the patience and commitment you’ll need to master those skills, but I can teach you the exercises, techniques, and concepts that will get you there eventually (as long as your frustration tolerance is high enough - lol). Luckily, there are plenty of show-stopping elements like globes and mandalas that are much more accessible - and instantly rewarding - for multihooping newbies. And because no hoop session is complete without a good dose of flow we’ll learn an accessible multihooping combo to have some fun with. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to my daughter. But if you’re thinking about busking, here’s an honest list of pros and cons from someone who lived it. Cons Street performers are often perceived as “lesser” artists, which can follow you into negotiations for gigs and other career opportunities. You will sometimes be treated condescendingly, occasionally even with contempt or hostility. Some buskers are very competitive. If they see you as a threat, things can escalate. I’ve been yelled at, called names, and even physically assaulted. You will probably have contact with authorities or others who try to move you along or shut you down. No contract, no financial security. Physical strain from uneven ground, hard surfaces, long hours. Often you have to work much harder to earn the same money you would make from a decently paid gig. The environment is noisy, chaotic and unpredictable. Interruptions can happen right before you “cash the hat”. You will meet people with bad intentions and you have to stay alert ALL THE TIME. You will experience life’s darkness. Pros You become a bulletproof performer. Distractions and interruptions can’t get to you and you learn to perform anywhere, on any surface. You learn how to capture an audience that is initially uninterested, sometimes even antagonistic, and turn them into a cheering crowd. That skill is invaluable. There is huge potential for personal growth: stepping outside your comfort zone, becoming sensitive to energies and dynamics, and learning humility. You will have extraordinary experiences that change how you see the world. You gain a deeper understanding of people and social realities. You meet extraordinary individuals. You meet A LOT of people. And sometimes, in the middle of all the chaos, you experience life’s magic. People ask me all the time if you need a license for busking, especially here in Germany 😅 There is no universal answer, since every country has a different policy and each town makes their own rules (or none). Unfortunately there’s a no-amp policy in almost every European country by now. Some places are more relaxed and only enforce it when it becomes a problem, some are very strict. My best advice: Ask other buskers, but ask more than 1 (some highly competitive ones cannot be trusted, unfortunately). A good strategy to avoid issues is switching locations frequently and keeping the volume moderate. Avoid playing the same music over and over - if you annoy the neighbors they will call the authorities and trust me, you don’t want that because GAME OVER I literally call this “hit and run” 🙈 #streetperformer #hulahoops #circus #busking by @shia_hulahoop

For everyone who says: “The only thing that matters is the quality of your work.” Yes - but also no. If no one feels invited to take a closer look, the quality of your work becomes irrelevant.
 That’s why presentation matters. Here’s proof: You’re seeing footage from three live performances where I’m performing the same tricks. So what’s the difference? Only the video footage with the green top shows a visible audience watching. 
In the other two, the crowd isn’t visible. Even worse, random people walk through the frame, seemingly uninterested. The visible crowd provides instant social proof. 
The passersby do the opposite - they subtly signal: this isn’t worth watching. Fun fact: All performances were successful and had an audience (outside the frame…) In the end, quality matters. But presentation decides how that quality is perceived. Every Busker Knows: Attention Attracts Attention The visible crowd watching my performance creates social proof that carries through the screen. Viewers want to know what all the fuss is about. Just like in real life, people are far more likely to stop and watch a street performer who has already gathered an audience than one standing alone. How Attention Actually Works You might have heard that we operate in two different modes of attention: a fast, automatic, energy-saving one and a slower, more deliberate one. Most of the time, we operate on autopilot. We scroll, we drive, we consume without much thought. But when something unexpected appears, we slow down, we evaluate, we pay attention. That’s why moments that feel out of place can interrupt scrolling: they activate a more conscious form of attention, making people snap out of autopilot and actively engage with your content. The Hook Over the years, I’ve posted many videos using the first two concepts. Some reached up to 200K views, but only these three went viral, with over 3 million views combined. 
The difference? They had a hook. A hook can be anything, as long as it gives the viewer a reason to keep watching. The hooks I used in these videos: 1. Visual hook: LED hoops Simple, but combined with the other two factors, it was enough to tip the algorithm over the edge. 2. “Comments I get” hook I translate real-life curiosity into relatable, humorous content. Everybody knows that feeling of thinking of the perfect comeback too late. 3. “storytime” hook “The day I pulled a muscle and almost got a fine” hints at something dramatic or boundary-crossing, creating enough intrigue to keep viewers watching (and reading). A video rarely goes viral because of the hook alone, but paired with attention-grabbing context, even a simple hook can set off a chain reaction. 👉 The original reels are pinned at the top of my profile and linked in my stories. #performingartist #hulahoop #reelsstrategy #growoninstagram #reelstips by @shia_hulahoop
