Hiking the @edgeofappalachia is the perfect way to spend a day of thanksgiving. I recorded 16 different kinds of mushrooms. Hiked about 13 miles. Reached out to some great people. And mostly I just had a great time hanging out. It’s wild to just realize I love my own company, and know that’s enough.

thank you @crcinci for inviting my "punk ambient band" @innerspace.sound to join the eclectic and outstanding program.

I enjoy playing with this band, which is an exercise in single minded focus. Each music set we play feels like a guided meditation.

When I can’t decide, I walk into the woods.
Here, no one has voted for anyone.
These beings live for hundreds of years.
Here, I have no regard for rules or property.
I ask for a new dream, one I cannot yet imagine.
Here, friends still check in on me.
Ask me how I am, tell me I am sweet.
I somehow startle rabbits and deer alike.
This place will outlast me.
Fossils squeezed in rocks older than I can comprehend.
This isn’t poetry, or it is.
It’s just my prayer; it’s just my medicine.
I don’t need a plan.
Don’t need to make sense.
There is no winning.
I plan to spend years in the company of the wind.
I can slide across rocks without regard.
Just one more life in a trembling whispered church.
Congregated trees unconcerned with the chaos.
Outside the racket.
Self contained, magical, and wild beyond belief.

Still riding the high off the best gig of my life—playing a David Bowie set as Major Tomboy with my favorite group of musicians ever.

We put in so much work in a short month, shifting from near total strangers to an idiosyncratic, wild, supportive band. Something really hit a nerve; more than 15 people told me afterwards how much they loved it—some young enough to be my kids, some old enough to be my parents.

The joy was palpable, so electric that I burst out laughing and lost my place in the middle of Ashes to Ashes.

I’ve never played a gig before as guitarist. Two of us have not played in a band before. None of us had played together before. We made a bunch of tiny mistakes all over the place, and we sounded really great. It was so wild and beautiful. Just pure magic.

It truly felt like a wild celebration, and people told me how much David Bowie meant to them personally. We all dressed as different Bowie’s throughout the eras. I went in drag. Emily had starman hands. Sara had the golden all seeing eye. Cyndi had the red trousers. Andy bridged a few eras. Emy reigned as Jared’s the Goblin King. 👑

I’m so grateful to @emyplaysbass @sarasimilar @paaarty_cat @cameljammm and @cyndituckerstinson for the supportive and wild bond we created. I’m down to do this again, anytime.

Is the Road Trip a Great American invention? Maybe.

I drove from Cincinnati to Yellow Springs to Chicago to Cleveland to Cincinnati to see Reggie Watts, Yasmine Williams, Brittany Howard, Michael Kiwanuka, Angelica Garcia, and Nilüfer Yanya while listening to All Fours by Miranda July. What a trip.

We don’t often get out of our normal world of routines, but when we do, it can feel like coming up for air after swimming underwater.

Things I learned:

Pain is sometimes the agent that brings transformation.
We never go back to the way things were; life only moves onward.
Generosity feels better than criticism.
No one else can tell you what is authentic for you.
Nothing in the natural world actually maintains a routine schedule.
Surround yourself with the best company.
Be open to the ideas of others.
You don’t need to be an expert; just be a fan.
