Tonight myself and @eshifflett89 had an amazing time at @mattdinniman Parade of Horribles Tour in Nashville! With the amazing Mauderator @maudesbookclub, it was an amazing time. And then in the parking lot, I ran into a Carl. Now I need to catch up on the series, about to start book 5. @mattdinniman made a lifelong fan of me tonight, as before the show he came by and spoke to as many people as he could. He even signed a book for someone who didn’t have a ticket. Truly an amazing evening. #litrpg #dungeoncrawler #dcc by @shiffreads

It’s Spooky Season and it’s my yearly rewatch of the scream franchise! If you are a fan of the franchise make sure to pick up Your Favorite Scary Movie by @ashley_cullins! It is a must read for fans of the franchise and of horror movies in general. As I said in the video my rankings are:

This past weekend, I finished the last book of The Reckoner series Calamity.

I enjoyed this book however, I feel this ending was rushed in my opinion. Many different things were added that I would’ve loved to explore more. For example, I would have liked more time with Knighthawk for and what happens with the world at the end of the book as well.

I will say David the main character wasn’t as annoying as he was in the last book. I did like how after the series started with we need to kill all epics, David realized that the epics could be saved. Now I think this is noble but I believe certain epics were beyond redemption. I also wasn’t a fan of how people started getting epic powers. I didn’t really like this in the boys either.

We were introduced to new epics and new parts of the us. Atlanta is now made of salt and can move! I liked Larcener powers of able to steal powers. Also, there is Loophole who could shrink anything or anyone down to small size or a giant size. Loophole also went out in a gnarly way.

One of the quotes that I liked was

This past weekend, I finally finished the greenbone saga! This final book broke me in the best of ways. After spending 3 books with the Kaul Clan I was so sad to see the story end. Hilo may go down as one of my favorite characters of all time. There was much growth seen with him over 3 books from the hot head leader of No Peak to the loving father and head of the clan.

Speaking of growth, the story went from the small island of Kekon in the first book to truly worldwide in this one. I really liked the way Fonda Lee moved time in this book with jumping only a couple months here and there but keeping the story moving. As with the story being on a worldwide scale, it worked very well.

These books were more political scheming and I liked that. We did have some action pieces that occurred and they had me on the edge of my seat. I will truly miss this world and all of these characters except of course Bero.

I truly wish everyone would read this series, as it gives the ShiffReads Seal of Approval. (My first time doing this, who knows if it sticks haha)

A couple of quotes that I loved was this:

“Don’t show how much you hate a man until you’re ready to be his enemy.”

Hilo telling Andy that he needed one of his brothers to live.

September was a great reading month for me! I wasn’t anticipating it with football starting but I got in a zone. This month I started the Green Bone Saga and Reckoners saga which I have really enjoyed . I have kicked off the Ronin Saga and really excited to get into book 1, after reading 2 of the novellas.

I look forward to finishing Green Bone Saga and Reckoners in October, as well as a book about the Scream franchise. I can’t wait to see what else October brings for me! by @shiffreads

Reading Echos From A Distant Star was like playing a video game! I wasn’t anticipating I would be reading a spooky book before October but this creeped me out. We are thrown in immediately as a Ranger (basically a space cop like Green Lantern without the ring) named Locilettle investigates a supposed derelict ship in space. Almost immediately we know something is up or is it Locilettle mind playing tricks on him?

We find out quickly that something dark and sinister is taking place on this supposed ship. Ritualistic killings that gave me SAW like vibes. The book moves quickly and I liked that. Going back to the video game comparison, the reader and Locilette find audio recordings of deceased people that pieces together what has happened on this ship.

I suggest this book as a quick read to kick off spooky season! by @shiffreads

I decided I was going to attack more books on my tbr starting with the Ronin Saga by @matthewwolfauthor! Shoutout to his post where he included the order of his books, which includes the novellas!

The first novella is An Arbiters Gift: A Ronin Saga Story and it tells the Story of Ezrah and Fera who are training to be Reavers/Arbiters in this world. I loved learning all the different kinds of magic in this world and how these people can use it. This includes how threading was channeling an element and then embracing what the element represents. Ex: fire is anger. A big theme in this novella is that you can’t run from destiny. I am not sure if we as a reader see Ezrah again but I hope to discover that he has become an Arbiter. I do know I want to see more of this world.

One of my fav quotes from this was: “When all of problems of the world seem to be mounting against you, focus only on what you can do”

I am told this by everyone I know.

The second novella I read was Visions of a Hidden. It tells the story of Rydel who is given up by his parents and is trained to be a hidden, which is the best of the best warriors. A hidden can change the course of history, so they have to be their best. Rydel works with two others were abandoned and they rely on each other during their hard training. I don’t want to give too much away but the final test for Rydel is amazing and shows how far he has came. I enjoyed the descriptions of the monsters that we see.

One of my fav quotes in this book:

“No on can make someone evil. Everything is a choice in this world but some darkness can be born within. “

I will be continuing my reading adventure in the Ronin Saga and really look forward to see what comes next! The first two novellas tell two separate stories but I want to see more of this world!

This week was a big week of reading for me! I continued my way through The Reckoners and read Mitosis (Book 1.5) and Firefight (Book 2). I thought the novella, Mitosis was okay. I enjoyed it but it was only 60ish pages. I really liked Firefight and it sets the stage for the last book. We saw a new part of America and learned even more about the epics.

One of fav quotes from firefight is: “If we stop helping people because we’re afraid of ambivalent or whatever, then we lose. ”

I also knocked out Green Lantern Earth One: Vol 1 and I was blown away about the telling of an GL origin story of Hal Jordan. I loved the artwork and the strong as it was different than usual for GL stories. I expect I will be reading Vol 2 shortly.

The last book that I read is my crown jewel of the week in my opinion. That Which Follows You Home by @josiahblizzardwrites! This was amazing, I loved this and I want to see more of this world, which I intend to do with The Heart of Hornwood. In that which follows you home you get multiple povs that spans so much time. I think my favorite pov would be Hjalmar and Blythe! They are the odd couple that basically become witchers! The magic here is great as well.

Some of my favorite quotes from this book was:

I started playing Wolverine this week and was only able to play 5% of the game. I expect to dig into this game more this week! I enjoyed what I had played so far.

This month I have taken it upon myself to finally read the Green Bone Saga! This weekend I finished book 2 in the series Jade War.

I thought I enjoyed book 1 but book 2 blew me away. The political scheming of this is ratched up from the small island of Kekon to a worldwide conflict of everyone wanting Jade and the abilities that Jade gives.

There wasn’t as many action sequences in this book but I feel like Fonda Lee really maximized these scenes so they were more
Impactful. The last 75 pages had me at the edge of my seat because I was nervous for what mat happen. It was also heartbreaking.

Bero continues to be one of my most hated povs I’ve ever had in a book series.

I really loved Andy’s growth in this book because he discovered more about himself. Andy has realized that he can be more than a weapon.

Hilo is the one of most charming characters I’ve seen in a book. He will
do one of the most dastardly things I’ve ever read and then I will be feeling bad for him 20 pages later.

Shae showed she could be more than just the weatherman, which the readers knew but the Jade Clans needed to know as well. She showed the Clan is her blood and the pillar is its master.

Quotes that I loved in this book:

“Belief is the first step toward making your dreams come true”

“Out of small resentments, spring great wars”

“Funny isn’t it? No matter where you are in the world, the one thing that keeps men from killing each other is a fear of what’ll happen after they’re dead”

And Hilo trying to not be scary but being upset when people were fearful of him.

“There were times when it was used to inspire fear, when he needed to do so, but when he had no intention to frighten, the reaction was a bit offensive. Hilo thinking ab making ppl fearful.”

Not much reading happened this week due to getting away with the wife and dog for our 10 year wedding anniversary. I was able to read some of Jade War and hope to finish it in the next couple of days. It all depends on if I can read during football haha. With some video games coming out shortly and football. I still plan on reading!

I decided to change it up and start a series that was suggested to me by my buddy @frankie_gii and that series is The Reckoners. I read steelheart written by Brandon Sanderson and I really liked it! It’s like the ya edition of The Boys where superheroes are bad. In this series they are called Epics and they are all villains and have taken over the world.

We meet David whose father was killed by an Epic called Steelheart in what is known as the calamity. These epics have taken over and Steelheart is what if there was a bad Superman. One thing I liked about this book was how every Epic has a specific weakness and Reckoners work to figure it out. I also enjoyed how despite most of humanity being accepting of what has happened, there are characters that are fighting back. It gives people hope, which is needed.

This book takes place in Newcago which was formerly Chicago before it was terraformed. This book was a page turner. I enjoyed it so much that ended up buying the rest of the series. (Which has new covers)

Some quotes that I liked in this:

“You can’t be so frightened of what might happen that you are unwilling to act.”
