Dear Young People (going into medicine),

The good days are really really good.
But bad days are inevitable.
And they don’t zero each other out unfortunately.
They are mutually exclusive.
You have to witness it all, feel it all, and go through it all.

Bad days in medicine are different than bad days in other careers.
This is not - losing an account, losing a client, losing money.
This is losing a patient, working during a mass casualty event, being named in a lawsuit, being a witness to human suffering, child abuse, sexual abuse - these can each be devastating - and can cause acute and chronic trauma for YOU.
Letting this accumulate can be dangerous.
You should have a plan for how to manage these types of days that involves immediate support from family and friends, from a therapist, and taking some time off if you need it.
Have a plan for days like those. Don’t wait until one of these catches you off guard. Your mental health and future you will thank you.
And from the very start of the journey, you should have daily rituals that are slightly repetitive and uncomfortable that build you a baseline of self love, self respect and mental strength - exercise, meditation, prayer.

Finally, make sure you check on your friends and colleagues that have had bad days too.
