Counting down the days until I trade classrooms for countries 🌍✈️
So excited to finally share the classes I’ll be taking and the route I’ll be traveling for my Semester at Sea journey. From getting my passport and scholarships to planning flights and preparing for Amsterdam in August, this adventure is starting to feel real. I’m beyond grateful for everyone supporting me along the way — I can’t wait to learn, explore, and grow through every port and every class 🤍⚓

The ocean is full of facts that sound completely made up… but science says otherwise. 🌊🔬

From three-hearted octopuses to jellyfish that can reset their life cycle, the ocean gets a little stranger the more we learn about it.

Which fact surprised you the most? 🐙🦈🐋🪼

A new chapter in my marine science journey 🌊🔬

After spending the past few years at my previous university, I've decided to change colleges and take my education in a new direction.

Change can be intimidating, but sometimes it’s exactly what you need to keep growing toward the person and professional you want to become.

One thing hasn't changed: my love for the ocean and my desire to build a future around understanding and protecting it.

I'm excited for everything this next chapter will bring — and I'm looking forward to bringing you along with me. 🌊

The deep ocean isn’t empty. It’s full of creatures we rarely see, surviving in ways that seem almost otherworldly.
Meet the vampire squid—a creature with a frightening name, but a surprisingly gentle way of life. The ocean still has so much left for us to discover.
Would you want to see what lives in the deep?

The ocean is full of animals that seem like they belong on another planet.

From a squid that feeds on "marine snow" to a shark with jaws that can shoot forward, the deep sea is home to some of the most incredible creatures on Earth.

Which one surprised you the most? Let me know in the comments!

Follow along for more marine science, ocean facts, and species spotlights.

Have you ever wondered why the ocean is blue?
It's a question many of us have asked, and the answer is more fascinating than you might think.
While the sky can influence how the ocean looks, the blue color mostly comes from the way water absorbs and scatters sunlight. Blue light travels farther through water than other colors, which is why our eyes often see the ocean as blue. Even something as simple as the ocean's color can tell scientists about water quality, marine life, and the health of marine ecosystems.
Curiosity is one of the best parts of science—and sometimes the simplest questions lead to the most interesting answers.
Have you ever wondered why the ocean can look turquoise, green, or even brown in different places? Let me know below! 🌊

This semester has been filled with opportunities to learn about marine science beyond the classroom.
From exploring the coast of North Carolina, to shadowing professionals with the Seafood Branch of the Alabama Department of Public Health, to experiencing a deep-sea fishing trip firsthand, each experience taught me something new about the many ways people interact with and depend on the ocean.
One thing I've learned is that marine science isn't just about studying the ocean—it's also connected to public health, fisheries, conservation, industry, and the communities that rely on healthy marine ecosystems every day.
As I prepare for Semester at Sea, I'm grateful for the experiences that continue to shape my understanding of our oceans and strengthen my passion for this field.

Some people have expensive hobbies. I decided to become obsessed with the ocean instead.

And now I'm literally crossing the world to study at sea.

A few weeks ago, I found myself explaining barnacles to a friend and realized they're one of those marine animals that most people see all the time but rarely think about.
Barnacles start life as tiny swimming larvae before permanently attaching themselves to a surface using one of the strongest natural adhesives in the ocean. They're also not mollusks, as many people assume—they're actually crustaceans, making them relatives of crabs and lobsters.
It's a great reminder that even some of the most common marine organisms have fascinating stories behind them.
