Nine years pass...

Three weeks from today will be my last day as a Los Angeleno. To commemorate this time, I am showing a curated selection of work done over this past near-decade at my soon-to-be-ex-home in Highland Park. Drawings, paper, sculpture, and the property itself (including the mythical shipping container) will be on display for the Ken champions and curious alike.

Closing house:

8/21 - 7-11PM
8/22 - 12-5PM
8/23 - By appointment

Numero co-founder Ken Shipley dragged Julie Doiron, Land of Talk, Mike Feuerstack, and Dany Placard into a cozy Montreal studio this fall. Magic poured out. Stream “Where The Road Goes From Two Lanes Down To One” everywhere, now. taken in Montreal, Canada by @ship_wrecking

I steer clear of the interstate whenever possible—there’s no magic to be found at an Applegreen off the turnpike. Uniontown, Pennsylvania, is ambered in the 70s, likely the last time the town’s 9500 residents were on the come up. At magic hour I wandered its downtown with my Nikon on the hunt for a disappearing America. The long way rarely disappoints. taken in Uniontown, PA by @ship_wrecking

30 years ago tonight…
Just before I left town for points east with a back pack full of records and a dream, a few of us trekked up to @bottomofthehillsf for a rare all ages gig. This was a pivotal evolution for the scene, as elders were transitioning out of hardcore into a more palatable sound for the drinking massive. I was caught in between, desperate for the next but not yet jaded. I’d seen Cars Get Crushed half a dozen times by then and picked up the recently released Drag Explosive LP that night. They already seemed out of reach. I asked A Minor Forest if they would do a 7” on Tree, and before the end of the century they’d end up on Vol. 8 of Post Marked Stamps. But it was the Lync/Modest Mouse super group Red Stars Theory that stole the show, a logical evolution of slow core and its sibling post-rock. Years later I tried to bring them to Numero, but our buds @suicidesqueeze already had a plan in place.

I was back at Bottom of the Hill two Sundays ago tour managing @julie.e.doiron, with scene survivor @aaronmichaelcalvert opening (more on that soon). Peppered amongst the audience of olds and youngs alike were members of Cars Get Crushed (and Reach Out, if you’re following family trees), closing an epic circle. Life is so much longer than you think it’s going to be.
