Today we are featuring the work of second year graduate student Shiyeon Ku @shiyeon.k Shiyeon Ku (b.2001) was born in Seoul, South Korea and now lives and works in the U.S.. She was a participant in the 2023 Yale Norfolk School of Art, and she holds a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. She is now continuing her education as MFA candidate at Rhode Island School of Design. ’I am always occupied with the thought of what it truly means to belong. From my experience as a mixed-race immigrant who grew up in both South Korea and American South, I still constantly think about all the differences of interactions I have with people based on their exposure to certain social constructs, culture, and history. In examining the binaries imposed on bodies, I explore themes of displacement, estrangement, and intersectionality. Hello hello 👋 It’s been a while since I posted but I wanted to share some exciting news 💃✨ I’ll be part of a group exhibition featuring works by @garypassanise @serenaliart @rachelparkart and @q1moon !! The opening of the show will be this coming Saturday, 4/20, from 5-7 PM 🙋‍♀️🍾 AT 📍Hoffman LaChance Contemporary (2713 Sutton Blvd). I’ll be showing few of my works—including new ones that was never revealed before 🫶✨ Hope to see ya there >:)Team Bugaboo comprises five artists: four emerging artists currently based in St. Louis, MO, and attending Washington University in St. Louis: Becky Moon, Rachel Park, Shiyeon Ku, and Serena Li, and master artist Gary Passanise, Professor Emeritus at Webster University who are connected through the power of artistic passion and friendship. The exhibition Bugaboo: Object of Fear features paintings, installations, and sculptures that expand the concept of fear in relation to memory, alienation, perception, and folklore. My Mother’s White Fridge (2022) / painted canvas, shredded mattress foam, thread I hated my family’s fridge growing up.I felt shame looking at the same stains inside the fridge door for years.I saw it as a sign that I’ll never escape from where I am, forever eating from the same old, white fridge. by @shiyeon.k
