At the centre of what was once China's first and oldest cement production facility, a historic dome structure has been transformed into the West Bund Dome Art Centre.

The West Bund Dome Art Centre is designed to host everything from art exhibitions and concerts to sports and other large cultural events. The interior of the building features a circular multipurpose hall of nearly 3,000 square meters, surrounded by flexible functional spaces such as the public foyer and a second floor viewing gallery.

Preserving the original 1920s industrial form and structure while accommodating the flexible cultural program is at the core of the project. The transformation is both a poetic tribute to the structure's industrial origins and a way of bringing new cultural life to a disused building.

The recently completed MacIsaac Health Building at the University of British Columbia was shaped as a highly integral combination of mass timber construction, modular design and offsite prefabrication.

A hybrid timber structural system allows for long spans to accommodate a diversity of program requirements, now and into the future. Composite timber/concrete panels were pre-assembled offsite and craned in to expedite construction.

The façade was developed as a modular and prefabricated panelized system aligned with the structural grid.

Together, these strategies greatly improved construction efficiency while helping to reduce the project's environmental impact.

Nei Hollerich, our masterplan for a new neighbourhood in Luxembourg, is organised around a connected public realm that links homes, workplaces and everyday destinations across the development.

Active ground floors contribute to lively, human-scaled streets and public spaces, while a network of parks, tree-lined routes and green courtyards supports recreation, social interaction and environmental quality.

The new neighbourhood will accommodate both the activity of a major transport hub and the quieter rhythms of residential life, with landscape and public space acting as the thread that connects them.

Libraries are among the most important public spaces of our time. They are places for learning, reflection, creativity, and connection, where people engage with knowledge in many different forms.

In an era that can feel increasingly fragmented, libraries offer a shared space for curiosity, dialogue, and lifelong learning. They are democratic places where knowledge is freely accessible, communities can form, and people who might not otherwise cross paths can meet.

From Aarhus to Christchurch, we have learned that a library is never just a building. Designing for diverse communities and contexts has shown us how architecture can support the many roles libraries play. Whether large or small, urban or rural, each can create opportunities for exploration, exchange, and a sense of belonging.

40 years ago, Schmidt Hammer Lassen was founded in Aarhus by Morten Schmidt, Bjarne Hammer and John F. Lassen.

A lot has changed since then. The practice has grown, shifted and evolved, shaped by the people, clients, projects and collaborations that have been part of it along the way.

What has stayed with us is a curiosity about how architecture can feel grounded and complete, while still leaving room for what comes next. That feels particularly relevant right now.

We are in the middle of transforming our new home at Thoravej in Copenhagen, and when summer comes, we look forward to opening the doors and bringing together old and new friends, clients, former colleagues, collaborators and everyone in between for a combined housewarming and 40-year celebration.

Until then, here is a small glimpse of some of the projects occupying us right now and of the next chapter already taking shape.

The MacIsaac Health Building, which opened last week, will create a new arrival experience for the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

The approximately 25,000 m² facility brings together a diverse mix of academic and research functions related to health sciences. The design encourages movement, social interaction, and interdisciplinary collaboration through its open circulation network and six-storey skylit atrium, that serves as the vibrant social heart of the building.

Sustainability was a foundational ambition of the project, and mass timber plays a central role in the building's low-carbon strategy. Beyond reducing embodied carbon, the exposed timber structure reflects the Pacific Northwest's rich building traditions and contributes warmth, character, and a strong connection to place.

The UBC Vancouver campus is located on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. In recognition of this, Musqueam representatives helped shape the design and landscape of the MacIsaac Health Building.

As @library_vic (SLV) celebrates 170 years, we're reflecting on the role public institutions play in shaping civic life.

Recently toured as part of @TEFMAinc’s 2026 program, hosted by Architectus Principal Ruth Wilson, SLV demonstrates exemplary refurbishment and adaptive re-use. A place where space, volume, acoustics, lighting, materials and interior settings are designed to host a huge array of learning activities.

The Vision 2020 redevelopment, delivered by Architectus and @shlarchitects, recognised that a contemporary library must serve many different users and ways of learning. The result? Heritage spaces transformed into vibrant destinations that balance history with the needs of a modern city.

Perhaps most importantly, the project illustrates how heritage buildings can evolve without losing their identity. Serving as a reminder that the most enduring public places are those that continue to adapt, ensuring each generation can find value, belonging and inspiration within them. by @shlarchitects

Last week, Campus Ullevål celebrated its official opening.

The project has been developed as a new knowledge and innovation campus in Oslo and marks the gateway to Oslo Science City, Norway’s first innovation district and one of the country’s key hubs for research, education and innovation.

Campus Ullevål is composed of two main volumes that shift and interlock in a dynamic composition, while their height and proportions respond to the surrounding context. The scale and placement of the building are carefully adapted to the site, with the taller volume facing Ring 3 and a more human scale towards the surrounding urban spaces. Varying façade rhythms and modules reinforce the interplay between the different volumes.

Campus Ullevål is designed to bring research, learning and innovation closer together, creating new connections between researchers, businesses, students and the wider public.

San Quentin Learning Center has been recognised as the Best Government/Public Building in California by ENR West in the 2026 Best Projects competition. The project also received the Award of Merit for Excellence in Safety.

We are proud to see this recognition of a project that radically redefines what a correctional facility can be. The transformation of San Quentin reflects a shift from incarceration to rehabilitation, creating a place where education, well-being, and human dignity support successful reintegration into society.

Designed as a learning-focused campus, the project brings together classrooms, workshops, a library, media and technology labs, a café, meeting spaces, and outdoor learning environments. These are linked through a network of pathways and green spaces that encourage community, movement, and access to nature.

Thank you to everyone whose expertise, dedication, and commitment helped bring this important new environment for learning and rehabilitation to life.
