This week at NASP my advisor proudly introduced me to his colleagues as his “most advanced pupil” and I’m going to ride that directly into my dissertation proposal

2016 was the year I tried to end my life.
.
It was the year I started therapy, the year I started dating my high school sweetheart, and the first year that I was a captain of the track team.
.
That was the year I took the ACT, the year a CPS case opened up against my abuser, and the year I became a senior in high school.
.
So much has changed since then. I went on a mission. I got married in the thick of the pandemic in 2020, which was the same year my parents got divorced. I got a dog. I got diagnosed with PTSD. I left the Mormon church. I got accepted to and graduated from college. I began a PhD program at 23 years old. I got divorced. I started working as a therapist. My dad remarried and I got adopted by my mom. I defended my comps. I passed the PRAXIS. I wrote an addiction recovery curriculum and started teaching.
.
I gained friends, I lost friends. I traveled a LOT. I became someone I hated, then evolved into someone I loved, multiple times. I re-wrote my morals. I learned to say no. I learned to ask for help. I stopped putting up with foul treatment from people who don’t want to change. I faked confidence until I believed it.
.
And honestly? I’d do it all again. I say this a lot, but it bears repeating: the person I am today is a love letter to every version of myself that endured so I could be.

Things I did this year (in no particular order):

-got adopted by my sweet mom:)
-(almost) finished my dissertation proposal
-presented at the NASP conference in Seattle
-was stalked for several weeks and successfully represented myself in a hearing that resulted in a protective order for myself and my loved ones
-met someone who raised my dating standards so much that I still can’t believe he’s real
-finally found a really good therapist
-grieved a LOT. Friendships, career plans, timelines for school, & my sweet neighbor Tim
-decided that my family members are my best friends in the world (which is a big deal given my childhood, iykyk)

thankful for all the people I’ll be carrying with me into 2026; here’s to a GOOD DAMN YEAR🥂 by @shlee_tay
