A magical week spent in Bali, as told by my travel journal.

The villa we stayed in left us this little notepad in our room, with really nice thick pages, it ended up being my go-to, on-the-go-sketchbook for our stay.

I really enjoyed having this light and nifty book on hand everywhere we went, so definitely getting something similar next trip!

I’d just tear out the page and add it to my main Moleskine journal (my current turquoise one featured in the last 2 slides), along with all the other tickets, beer labels, doodles and interesting findings along the way.

I bought my first Moleskine in 2014 (a red one), which ignited a love for documenting life in one place through drawings and notes and became an excuse for collecting and keeping all the sentimental papers we pick up as we go. Oh, and buying stationery for it too…

These days, my Moleskines only really come out for special events worth noting and while travelling, but they’ve become a fun and important way for me to stop, look and capture fleeting exciting moments that I can revisit at the flip of a page.

That and I can’t bear to throw away plane tickets and the likes. taken in Seminyak, Bali by @shmaymee

“Don’t Be Such a Cow”
(naming credit goes to my mom 😂)

This is my first oils in too many years! Starting this painting needed a weird kind of courage. I was nervous, reluctant, scared (?!) to attempt something I used to do so often and easily, that slowly was reduced to once every couple of years to the point I wasn’t sure I remembered how to actually paint, particularly in oils.

And it was a re-learning curve for sure. There’s a process to it all that I’d forgotten and kinda only began remembering once doing, and sometimes doing wrong first.

Luckily oils are pretty forgiving and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Even after the terrible proportion attempts in the beginning.

Why a cow? Because I love painting cows and I wanted something familiar and straight forward. Nothing ground breaking. An easy warm up.

I really want to keep the painting ball rolling now that I’ve broken the seal - so hopefully there’ll be more to come soon!

Ps. Oliver Tree was the sound track to this painting the whole way through so only feels fitting to feature him as the audio.

10/10 would not recommend unless you reaaaallly have to sell half your belongings before moving.

Also, thank you to my YouTube music for introducing me to this song by The Kooks that has somehow not crossed my path in its 17 years of existence before (that I can recall), because... Damn. I’m obsessed.
