Under the Anglo-Japanese Alliance signed in 1902, Japan and Britain maintained a close military and diplomatic partnership.
During World War I (1914–1918), the British government needed to protect Allied transport ships from attacks by German and Austrian submarines (U-boats) and requested Japan to dispatch naval forces. In 1917, Japan sent the Second Special Squadron to the distant Mediterranean island of Malta, undertaking escort missions for Allied convoys. Over the course of the mission, they carried out 348 escort operations, protecting a total of 788 ships and about 750,000 troops, earning the nickname “Guardians of the Mediterranean.”
During these operations, ships such as the destroyer Sakaki were torpedoed by enemy submarines, resulting in the deaths of many Japanese sailors. To honor their sacrifice, a cemetery and memorial were established in Kalkara, Malta. taken in Kalkara Naval Cemetery by @sho__y
