dear seventeen-year-old me,

i know exactly where you are. you are on a train by the window, listening to a playlist full of songs that feel like they were written specifically for you. you have 'looking for alaska' in your hand, something you read over & over to escape your cage. you are staring out at the stars wondering how big your life is going to be.

you are so full of love. you love stories deeply. you love music deeply. you love places you've never been to & experiences you never had.

you love your people, even the ones you've not met yet. and most of them will make you regret being soft & trusting. and there will be people that make you feel foolish for loving as deeply as you do. there will be nights you will cry till you lose your voice & there will be days you won't feel the sunlight on your skin. there will be not days or months, but years when you don't recognise the person staring back at you in the mirror. you will crave someone that sees your ocean but no one would even dip their toes. then there will be one that dares take a dive but you will not learn to trust it until it's too late.

you will be grieved for years, and then one day, you will be found again. you were there the whole time, still looking at the world with wonder, still loving books, music & places.

i promise, i haven't forgotten. i'm glad i didn't cause you're my north star. there is no one else i'd rather be more like, though wiser & free. i love how your dreams were never about achievements, but of experiences. i spent years hating you but i now know, without you, i wouldn't know how to be.

you spent so much time dreaming about the woman you would become. well, i'm her. and despite everything, i'm here. and i'm stronger than you think. and everyday, i'm trying to build a life that would make you smile in attempts that you would admire me the way i admire you.
