The Talk of the Town is GOOD NEWS happening in Oakland! 🙌🏽💚

Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is demonstrating what happens when we intentionally invest in our own communities!

Through its voter-approved bond-funded projects, OUSD’s Small Local Business Program has helped reinvest an estimated $500 MILLION back into Oakland’s local economy since 2008, while growing local business utilization from approximately 6% to an impressive 50%!

Now THAT is economic impact! 🙌🏽

This is more than a success story. It’s a powerful example of economic empowerment, community investment, and what is possible when public dollars create real opportunities for local businesses, jobs, and families.

OUSD is helping set a national model for how public agencies can leverage taxpayer investments to strengthen local economies and build generational wealth.

And it’s a story worth telling—not just in Oakland, but across the nation! 🌍

I’m especially proud that Team 360 has had the privilege of partnering with OUSD to help ensure that small and local businesses have a seat at the table, access to opportunities, and meaningful participation in projects that are transforming our schools and communities.

At a time when we hear so much about the challenges facing Oakland, let’s also shine a light on what’s working, what’s making a difference, and what’s possible when we invest in our own!

This week I joined the OUSD bus tour at Madison Park Academy.

Measure Y is putting voter-approved bond funding into our school buildings, and this stop shows where that money is going. The City and OUSD are partners in this work.

Thank you to Congresswoman Lateefah Simon for giving opening remarks. Thank you to Shonda Scott and her team for organizing the tour, and to the OUSD Board and the Alameda County Board of Education for their leadership. Our students deserve schools that reflect how much this community values them. by @shondascott360

Imagine watching yourself with Oprah Winfrey (WOW) for the very first time… surrounded by people who have known you for decades. 🥹🙏🏽✨

That was my night in LA.

City Club LA hosted us for an impromptu screening of Shonda on The @oprahpodcast , where I had the incredible blessing of sitting with Ms. Oprah Winfrey to talk about my debut book, Give Me A Year: 12 New Things to Embrace Change and Live Your Best Life, and the 12 New Things®️ lifestyle.

What made it even more special? I had never watched the full conversation.

I wanted my first time to be more than pressing “play.” I wanted to take it all in and celebrate with people who have been part of my story—family, dear friends I’ve known for decades, and fellow UCLA alumnae. 💙💛

Watching myself across from @oprah , surrounded by people who knew me before the book, the tour, the interviews—and knew some of the journey it took to get here—hit differently. 🥹

We laughed. We cheered. We reflected. And I allowed myself to simply receive the blessing and celebrate how far God has brought me.

A reminder: don’t become so focused on what’s next that you forget to celebrate the blessings in front of you that once seemed impossible.

I did a new thing. I wrote a book. I stepped out on faith. And God guided my footsteps to a seat at Ms. Oprah Winfrey’s table. 🙏🏽🙌🏽
