Most of what people think they know about fireplaces stopped being true years ago.

Safety is the big one, understandably, but cool touch glass and automatic shutoffs have been standard for years now, not upgrades. Cost and chimneys get lumped in right behind it, usually from the assumption that adding a fireplace means major construction, when a direct vent or electric unit can often go straight into an existing wall.

The one myth we can’t engineer our way around is the idea that every fireplace company works the same way. Most sell a box and leave. We design the room, build the wall, run the gas line, and stand behind every part of it.

You can usually tell an electric fireplace from a real one in about two seconds. The Orion Multi from Modern Flames takes a lot longer than that.

Every fireplace needs a flame. Not every fireplace needs logs.

This is fire glass from the Barbara Jean Collection: tempered, heat resistant glass in half inch pieces, sold by the colour. Cobalt Blue, Black, Bronze, and Zircon Glacier Ice each catch and reflect the flame differently, so the same burner can look completely different depending on which one you choose.

Most fireplaces are a wall. This one is a window.

Most design consultations happen in daylight. Most fireplaces get used after dark.

That gap matters more than people expect. A stone that looks warm and textured at 2pm can go flat under lamp light, while brushed metal that seemed cool and quiet in the afternoon suddenly catches every flicker of the flame once the sun’s down. Even the furniture layout tends to sort itself out once the fire becomes the thing everyone’s actually facing.

The flame gets all the attention, but the logs underneath are doing a lot of the work.

From the Barbara Jean Collection, these come in driftwood sets of three or five pieces for a lighter, coastal look, or oak sets of four or five pieces if you want something more traditional. There’s also a split oak option for a bit more texture in the stack. Same flame, completely different personality depending on which one sits underneath it.

Living in a condo doesn’t mean crossing a fireplace off the list. It just changes which one you’re allowed to have.

Most buildings in Vaughan prohibit gas lines and won’t approve venting modifications, which is usually where the conversation stops. It shouldn’t.
