Your grandmother’s diamond deserves better than a drawer.

Bespoke at Mad Fine is for the stone with a story, the ring you’ve pictured for years, the piece nobody else makes. We start by listening. Then we set a direction and a budget, and source diamonds and colored gemstones where you want them.

New ideas may start as sketches. Resets and recreations go straight to 3D rendering, which every bespoke piece gets. Handcrafted in New York City, usually in 8 to 10 weeks.

One of one. That’s the point.

“I think I need some help” is the bravest phrase in the English language.

I have a personal connection to almost every piece in the collection, but Zoloft is the medication that saved my life.

After the birth of my son, I experienced severe postpartum depression with psychotic symptoms. I told no one.

Here’s how it got that bad without anyone noticing.

My two decades in the ballet world taught me to control every muscle fiber while simultaneously disassociating from my internal experience. From childhood, I was taught that discomfort meant I was doing it right. By necessity, to survive in the intense professional ballet environment, I developed a high pain tolerance, physical and mental.

So when postpartum symptoms started, I knew how to hide them, like an excruciating leg cramp during the Swan Lake pas de deux.

My postpartum symptoms became so torturous, so unsustainable, that I couldn’t imagine continuing to live like that. I called a new friend, writer Jessi Klein, whom I’d met at a party when we both had newborns. I wasn’t even sure she’d remember me.

She not only remembered, she was in a similar place. Then she said something that blew my mind.

“What award are we trying to win?” she said. “There’s no award for suffered the most.”

After our call, I emailed my therapist to ask for a referral to a psychiatrist.

The carved gemstone SSRI pendants, part of the Emotional Baggage collection, turn the things we can’t say into mementos of pride. They say: I matter. Sometimes saying it out loud is what saves you. Sometimes that means wearing it on your chest.

They say don't wear white after Labor Day. Don't bring up death or politics at dinner. Don't buy yourself fine jewelry on a Tuesday. We've always been a little rebellious: fine jewelry, punk values.

I never set out to start a business. I wanted to make jewelry that says the quiet part out loud. The parts of ourselves we're taught to hide can be the very thing that sparks a conversation, and sometimes a real connection. That's the mission. Designed by one woman, handcrafted in Manhattan's Diamond District.

Three years ago today, nearly 1,200 people were murdered and 251 were taken hostage. I am still shaken that human beings could act with such barbarity.

Since then, antisemitism has exploded worldwide, even in my own neighborhood. Synagogues targeted. People attacked for nothing more than being Jewish. Just last week, a plane full of Israeli families was nearly brought down mid-flight. And most personally, a friend of many years said blatantly antisemitic things to my face, then put it in a disappearing DM. I walked away from that friendship in shock, confused how someone who sees themselves as progressive could flippantly discriminate against a minority group.

While I'm not religious, being Jewish is part of my identity. I grew up learning conversational Hebrew at my Jewish day school, and I have the Sh'ma tattooed on my forearm. But you don't have to be Jewish to stand with the Jewish people and against hate, in all its forms.

Oy vey is a popular Yiddish phrase that's become part of our everyday lexicon. But the expression comes from centuries of violence, exhaustion, and a refusal to lose our sense of humor anyway. It signifies grief with a raised eyebrow, a sigh that knows we will survive. I made it into something you can wear to show that you GET IT. A portion of every sale from the F*ck Antisemitism Collection benefits @holocaustmuseum.
