Trekking packs designed in Bonsall, CA
When you go out, you never come back the same.
POSTS STORIES REELS
In the summer of 2021, I took my two oldest kids on the John Muir Trail. Our trip stretched to nearly a month. That first week tested them in ways no amount of training could have fully prepared them for day after day of pushing their limits, both physically and mentally. But then something shifted. They found their trail legs, and the struggle gave way to something deeper. The rest of the trip was smoother, filled with moments we still talk about, moments only we truly understand. I grew up backpacking, spending countless hours in the wild, but I never fully appreciated how it shaped me until I saw the change in my kids when we got home. Since then, I’ve noticed again and again how the trail taught them to step into the unknown and take on whatever they find there. And in watching them, I began to see it in myself, a conviction I hadn’t recognized before. We believe that anytime someone steps into the unknown, they never come back the same. That’s the heart of RADL, to help people recognize that part of themselves that calls them upward and to answer it with courage. by @shopradl
Why RADL. The name comes from a line by Dylan Thomas “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Not because we want to sound intense. But because we know what it feels like when something in you starts to dim. When you start to go quiet inside. At RADL, we believe in the Hero’s Journey. Not just as myth, but as a map of the human experience. Psychologists call it narrative identity, the story you tell yourself about who you are, and who you’re becoming. And stories don’t change without tension. Without stepping into the unknown. That’s why the trail matters. It’s not just scenery. It’s a physical expression of the pattern: The call to leave what’s familiar. The threshold. The tests. The descent. The moment of clarity. And then the return with something earned. Every time you shoulder your weight and walk into something hard, you’re doing more than hiking. You’re practicing the pattern. And the better you get at it out there, the easier it is to apply in your everyday life. The light comes back not through ease, but through movement, risk, responsibility. That’s why RADL exists, to help you carry what matters most on the trail and off. by @shopradl

New RADL hat is up on the website. The most common thing we hear about our hats: “This is my favorite fitting hat.” So we made another one. by @shopradl
In 1847, Søren Kierkegaard,  the Danish philosopher and theologian,  often called the father of existentialism, wrote to his sister-in-law Henriette, who had been struggling with poor health and melancholy. Kierkegaard knew something about melancholy himself. He wrote about it throughout his life. But he also had a practice that reliably brought him back into the world: he walked. He walked Copenhagen for hours. Through streets and parks, among strangers and friends. Walking wasn’t just exercise for him. It was part of how he thought. So he gave Henriette the advice that had worked for him: “Above all, do not lose your desire to walk.” He told her that he had walked himself into well-being, walked away from illness, and “walked myself into my best thoughts.” Then he made the claim even stronger: “Health and salvation can be found only in motion.” There is something worth remembering in that. Sometimes we think our way toward change. Sometimes we have to move first. Go for a walk. by @shopradl
Trying to teach my kids to be curious about what’s beyond the horizon, and comfortable going out to find it. There are few better places to learn that than the American West. Colorado, August 2026. by @shopradl
Every RADL pack comes with a journal because we believe part of the value of going out is making sense of what happened when you return. Narrative psychologist Dan McAdams argues that we make sense of our lives by constructing stories from our experiences, connecting who we were, what happened to us, and who we are becoming. The trail gives us unusually good material. You get tired. Plans fail. You get scared. Someone helps you. You discover you’re capable of something you didn’t know you could do. Patterns that are difficult to see in ordinary life become clear on the trail. Writing gives you a chance to notice them. What happened? How did I respond? What does that tell me about myself? What do I want to do differently when I go home? The point isn’t just to record the journey. It’s to bring something back from it. by @shopradl
