Sometimes the most interesting part of a business isn't what they sell.

It's why they started.

Sokofa's story is about connecting African creators with customers beyond their immediate markets, an idea that took shape while founder Tope Abuloye was in Edinburgh.

These are the stories we want to tell more often.
Not just "buy from this business."

But:
"Meet the person building it."

Know a Nigerian founder in the UK whose story deserves to be told? Tag them or send us their page.

Edinburgh, it's your turn!🇳🇬

We've already found Sokofa, an Edinburgh-based marketplace founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Tope Abuloye, connecting African artisans and businesses with customers around the world.

But we know that's only scratching the surface.
There are Nigerian-owned businesses across fashion, beauty, retail, professional services and more that deserve to be discovered.

Edinburgh Naijas, tag ONE Nigerian-owned business we absolutely need to know about.

Meet Azalia, one of the makers behind Sokofa, working out of FCT, Nigeria. Every adire piece starts as plain cotton before it goes through hand dyeing, so no two pieces ever turn out quite the same. This maxi dress carries that same story, made to order, one artisan at a time.

The cowrie shell has been trading hands for longer than most currencies we know today. Long before paper money, these small shells traveled ancient trade routes from the Indian Ocean into West Africa, valued for their beauty and because they were almost impossible to fake.

Long after coins took over, the shell stayed. You will still find it in beadwork, waistlines, and ceremonial dress today, worn as a symbol of prosperity, fertility, and status across many African cultures.

Swipe through for the story. Some things are worth more than a price tag ever said.

Every pattern carries a story.
Adire is a Yoruba resist-dyed textile tradition from southwestern Nigeria, known for its rich indigo colour, expressive patterns and generations of skilled craftsmanship.
Before the fabric is dyed, selected areas are tied, stitched, folded or covered with a resistant material. Once the cloth is dyed and the resist is removed, the protected sections reveal the distinctive patterns beneath.
Adire is more than beautiful fabric. Its patterns can carry memory, identity, observation and cultural meaning, while every handmade piece reflects the skill and creative choices of its maker.
Today, artisans and designers continue to reinterpret Adire while preserving the knowledge behind the tradition.
Swipe through to discover how Adire is made.
Which part of the process surprised you most?
