Every city has neighborhoods, and every neighborhood has a character that took decades to develop. The building you work in sits inside that character whether you acknowledge it or not. We think you might as well acknowledge it — lean into the history, the texture, the people and institutions that make a place feel like itself. When we talk about being place-based, that's what we mean. Not that we've decorated with local references, but that the neighborhood is genuinely part of what you're getting. by @shopworkspace

The amenities are easy to list. The private offices, the conference rooms, the phone booths, the fast internet, the coffee. What's harder to describe is what happens when you put a roomful of people — founders, freelancers, nonprofits, creative agencies, professional services firms — in the same building and let them exist in proximity to each other for a few months. You end up with something that doesn't show up on a spec sheet. That's the part we're actually trying to build. by @shopworkspace

Early-stage companies need a professional environment more than almost anyone, and can justify it less easily than almost anyone. We've always thought that was worth addressing. A coworking membership gives a two-person startup a real address, a professional front door, access to conference rooms when a pitch requires them, and a community of people who've solved the problems they're currently running into. The ROI on that, when you calculate it honestly, is usually pretty clear by @shopworkspace

he dedicated desk is a specific kind of commitment. Not a private office, but also not the coworking lottery, whoever shows up first gets the best spot. It's your desk. Your monitor, your keyboard, your things where you left them. The ritual of arriving at the same place every day and having that place know you. It sounds like a small thing. For a lot of people, it's exactly the structure that makes a workday feel like a workday. by @shopworkspace

A few weeks back, the Carroll Street Bridge reopened after five years of repairs and we threw it a party.

We hosted the block party portion at @420Carrollst alongside @ArtsGowanus, @Van_Alen, @gowanusdredgers, @Igloo_NYC, @heyclaybrooklym, @gowanuscanalconservancy, artist duo @Mookntaka and more of the wonderful people who make Gowanus one of our favorite places.

There were illuminated canal creatures floating on the canal. There was a costume contest. There was canoeing. There was a genuinely unhinged amount of craft supplies. This is the kind of afternoon that reminds you why we picked this neighborhood in the first place, it still surprises you.

More of Mookntaka's creatures are on view around Gowanus through August if you know where to look.

Nearly a decade after The Shop opened its first location inside the Contemporary Arts Center, we've opened our second in New Orleans.

Shop SOMA sits on the ground floor of The Standard in South Market, and it carries the same instinct that started this whole thing: a workspace should feel like it belongs to its city, not like it was shipped in from a template.

The design, neighborhood and rhythm is different from the CAC and that's our favorite part. Three cities in, we're more convinced than ever that one of one is the only way to build. taken in New Orleans by @shopworkspace

The Shop SOMA is now open in South Market, expanding @theshopnola's footprint in New Orleans with a 5,400-square-foot coworking space featuring 11 private offices, 12 dedicated desks, 30 commons memberships, conference rooms, event space, and flexible work areas. More than two-thirds of the private offices were leased before opening day, reflecting strong early demand. Inspired by the "Dawn and Dusk Downtown" concept, the design draws from the changing light over the Mississippi River and the Crescent City Connection, incorporating local art and warm, thoughtful interiors. As Downtown New Orleans continues to attract companies, entrepreneurs, and talent, #TheShopSOMA strengthens the neighborhood's growing ecosystem of flexible workspaces while adding to the vibrant mix of businesses, restaurants, retailers, and services that make South Market a dynamic place to live and work.

If you asked our members to describe this place, you'd get different answers depending on the city and the person. Some would talk about the design. Some about the team. Some about the community they didn't expect to find. Some about the fact that it just feels good to come to work here, in a way that's hard to nail down precisely but unmistakable once you've experienced it. That last one is the thing we care most about, and the hardest one to manufacture. We spend a lot of time trying to figure out what produces it and how to make sure it stays. by @shopworkspace

We spend a lot of time around people who left corporate offices and never want to go back to them, and also people who need something that functions like an office without the things that made corporate offices miserable. Fluorescent lights. Conference rooms that feel like interrogation rooms. The sense that the space was designed for liability avoidance rather than actual human beings. There's a version of professional that doesn't require any of that. We've been trying to figure out what it looks like. by @shopworkspace
