A little behind the scenes ahead of this weekend’s @inpressbooks Writing Conference at WRITE Festival: the books have arrived!

We’ll have a full Inpress bookstall @theword_uk this Saturday, bringing together work from the writers, poets and publishers joining us across the day.

That includes books from @shortestwitch and @betarish ahead of our lunchtime conversation, alongside work from @scotstreetpress’ Jean Findlay and Petra Reid from the day’s final session. Pictured here.

We’ll also have copies of Oaths and Offerings from @carnyxpress on the stall, alongside a selection of individual work supplied by @ejlannie and Mae Tang.

It’s always lovely seeing the books arrive before an event like this and getting everything together for the day itself.

Join us at The Word in South Shields this Saturday 5th September, for three conversations looking behind the scenes of writing and publishing, with plenty of books to browse in between.

Tickets are available from The Word. Hope to see you soon! taken in North East UK by @shortestwitch

Excited to be returning to @theword_uk for the @inpressbooks Writing Conference as part of WRITE Festival, and for my third year running I’ll be there in a slightly different capacity: this time as part of the Inpress team.

I’ll be helping to host and chair two panels across the day, bringing together writers, poets, editors and publishers to get behind the finished book and talk about what actually happens on the journey towards publication.

I’m particularly looking forward to our lunchtime session, The Many Jobs of a Writer, because I’ll be joining poets @shortestwitch and Rishi Dastidar to explore what it takes to build a working life in poetry.

Between them, Kym and Rishi have experience not only of writing and publishing their own collections, but of editing, running presses, creating anthologies, working with magazines and championing the work of other writers. We’ll be talking about the many different roles that can sustain a life in poetry, and what a writing career can really look like beyond simply getting a book published.

Elsewhere across the conference, The Route to a First Book brings together North East writers @ejlannie and Mae Tang with @carnyxpress editor Nathaniel Spain to discuss short fiction, building a body of work and finding a home for that first book.

The day concludes with Shaping the Story, as @scotstreetpress’ Jean Findlay and Petra Reid explore the editorial process across different forms, bringing historical and international voices to new audiences, and plenty more besides.

There’ll also be books, opportunities to chat, and freebies, so make sure to grab a place.

Tickets from @theword_uk. I can’t wait to be back!

A writer, a braag and the lambton worm walk into a book festival—its not a set up, just my plans for this autumn. Catch me if you can (and you can, my body is useless) in Newcastle, Durham, Stroud, Aldeburgh, or Edinburgh! ❤️

As usual, see link in bio for tickets. by @shortestwitch

SO a million years ago when I was 22, I wrote a ridiculous love poem half a week into being in a relationship, half-embarrassed with myself but also already utterly convinced that the relationship was something special. I needn't have worried so much, because I'm relentlessly correct about things and its our 7th anniversary today.

Anyway, I'm terrible at shmaltz, it makes me itchy, so this is about as close as I'll get. by @shortestwitch

I never shared this poem, I'm still friends with a bunch of my old flatmates and it felt like it needed an explanation, but ALSO wasn't it just this though? Anyway, it was longlisted for the National Poetry Prize 2025, so it seems weird to hide it away in my book like a secret. by @shortestwitch
