Mark your calendars! The Public Life of Comics presentation & panel discussion will take place at the Central Public Library the day after Short Run. It’s FREE! We’ll hear from 4 artists using comics to communicate, educate, and move the needle on our biggest issues. With James Sturm, Whit Taylor, Meredith Li-Vollmer, and Kelly Froh.

@shortrunseattle focuses on the medium of comics as a coalescence of art and literature. They believe in the intimate experience of holding a book in your hands. That’s why they highlight artists from the Pacific Northwest and around the world who make alternative comix and self-published, small press, and handmade books of all kinds.

Founded in 2011 to celebrate and support Seattle’s lauded comics community, @shortrunseattle has since become a year-round arts organization with an annual comics residency for non-binary and women artists, a monthly artist talk series, a micropress, educational workshops, and our most-anticipated event - Short Run Comix Festival, now in its 14th year!

I first found Kelly’s comics last year in the @seattlekingcountyclinic’s “SKETCHES FROM THE MARGINS 2016-2018,” and in her podcast interview, she advocates for the need to have more socio-political issues like health care be told in comic form.

After working with The Clinic, Kelly’s interest in comics genre-wise began to shift. As she grew older, she wanted to tell stories related to the problems that she faces now such as aging, bodily health problems, and staying healthy.

Kelly and her team are still looking for exhibitors for their 14th annual Short Run Comix Festival, so submit your application online at their website, shortrun.org, before July 31!
