A little fragrance-community appreciation post 💗🌹

This past year has been one of the most difficult and unexpected years of my life, and I just want to say thank you to the fragrance community.

The kindness, messages, encouragement, conversations, recommendations, and friendships I’ve found here have meant more to me than you probably realize. On some really hard days, fragrance — and this community — gave me something fun to think about, talk about, learn about, and look forward to.

And apparently, somewhere in the middle of all of this, I suddenly developed a Louis Vuitton fragrance problem. 😂

I don’t know exactly when it happened. I don’t know who authorized it. But somehow I went from appreciating LV fragrances to thinking, Wait…do I need another one? 👀

So thank you for being here, for supporting me through my illness and recovery this past year, and for enabling what may be the beginning of a very expensive Louis Vuitton era. 😂👜✨

Fragrance really can be more than perfume. Sometimes it’s memory, escape, connection, and a little bit of joy when you need it most.

Tonight’s DCPS hiring event left me feeling incredibly hopeful.

Walking into a room filled with hundreds of educators, school leaders, related service providers, and professionals looking to serve students was a powerful reminder that there are still so many people who believe in public education and want to make a difference.

Some were just beginning their careers. Others were seasoned educators exploring new opportunities, new schools, or new ways to make an impact. Every conversation reflected a shared commitment to students.

No matter where each person ultimately lands, seeing that level of passion, experience, and dedication gathered in one place was genuinely inspiring.

Our students deserve talented, compassionate educators, and tonight proved that there are so many people ready to answer that call.

Listening to Carol Channing’s “Housework” from Free to Be… You and Me hits differently as an adult.

What always stood out to me wasn’t just the message about gender roles. It was the way the song quietly challenges us to question what we’re being told.

The people in the song are scrubbing, scraping, cleaning, and smiling about it. And we’re supposed to stop and ask: Do they actually enjoy this? Or is that just the story we’ve been taught?

Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, many of us learned to be skeptical of advertising, television, and the messages society handed us. We understood that just because someone is smiling on screen doesn’t mean they’re telling the truth.

Today, I sometimes wonder if we’ve lost some of that skepticism. We watch influencers enthusiastically promoting products, lifestyles, and “perfect” lives, and too often we accept the performance at face value.

More than 50 years later, “Housework” still feels relevant—not because it’s about cleaning, but because it’s about critical thinking. It reminds us to look beyond the image being presented and ask: Who benefits from this story, and is it actually true?

That’s a pretty powerful lesson from a children’s album released in 1972.

This version connects the song to media literacy and critical thinking, which I think is one of the most enduring themes of Free to Be… You and Me. by @shosh2008

So why is everyone talking about executive functioning skills today? Our students are just as smart if I’m smarter if we don’t teach them the skills that I have to get themselves organized and manage their own work they won’t live into their full potential.
